    ugly tuxedos

A pair of American Black Vultures hanging out on the rocks in Miami. Black is a tough color to get right sometimes and I'm wondering if the saturation/contrast/sharpness looks OK on this one...

    Hi Jetrim,

Black birds sure are hard to get right!

I don't think they look sharp enough around the eyes and the colours do look a little dull, but it's not easy this time of year! You should try and post this in the N&W Forum, there's some VERY good people there who can give you much better advice than me

This is an experiment, I noticed this came out much darker than the original when I added as an attachment. The photo on the left is what I intended to post and the one on the right is what happened when added as attachment here - very, very odd!!

    Hi Jetrim,

Your first post shows up on my monitor quite a bit darker than even the right one just above???

How did you save it/post it to the the web/Photography Review?

I know Corel has several different 'standard' export types. Many programs when the file is saved for the 'web' or using web safe colors, will further compress a file and it will lose a lot of dynamic range. It 'clips' the colors but unlike playing with levels it doesn't show up in a histogram except shifted left or right.

Seeing the 'text' at the top of the right most image would make me wonder if that is an export mode for a special purpose such as printing or the like. I'm not a Corel expert or user of late, but I do remember when I last used the program that it will change an image.

All three images are the exact same photo, no changes, no re-saves.

PP'd in Corel PSP X2 then simply "save as" .jpg (not exported)

photo 1 - uploaded the saved file as an attachment to PR post

photo 2&3 - opened X2 and file, then opened browser, then used PSP v.7 to take a screenshot of 2&3 side by side (capture desktop) and cropped/uploaded that screenshot of the two copies to my website and inserted that image link into my second post.

The point I was trying to demonstrate is that PR's attachment software compresses/darkens the photo further than if the same photo is hosted on an external source. I suspect others are probably having this problem as well (Old Timer's "clown inside" thread comes to mind immediately). On most images it is probably not noticable enough to cause alarm, but when you get to those few that are "pushing the envelope" (Like ADMA's bird with a seed) the problem shows itself in dramatic fashion.
