    Two really nice Canons.

Okay, it's been a while since I've posted in here. But I wanted to show off two of my two new editions to my film collect.

First up, I purchased this camera at a local antique/thrift shop for $30. It's a Canon Canonet 28. It takes 35mm film and although the lens doesn't come off so you can change it, the lens is a fixed 40mm f2.8. Which isn't bad. The camera came with the original leather case and is in working condition.

And the second one in my collection that I bought is a Canon AE-1 SLR. I bought this one from a girl at school that really didn't know what she had, or didn't care. Either way, this camera came with a 75-205 telephoto lens plus two 2x teleconverters and one 3x teleconverter, a Sigma 28mm wide angle lens, multiple filters as well as lens caps, 3 release cables, a Vivitar flash, and some kind of sync cable that I've not figured out what it goes to yet. All this camera in a really nice leather bag. Not fake leather or buffalo leather. Real leather. All I paid for all this was $100. Camera is still in working order and the insides are super clean. Was stoked about this deal.

First...I was very disappointed that these werre not large guns that go BOOM!

You got some great deals there!

Critique:The first shot is very good and sharp. The bright areas in the bg are distracting as is whatever it is sitting on.
The shot of the AE-1 is great also but wish it had more room at bottom.

Maybe I should include the word, "Cameras" in the title. lol

But thank you. I thought so too.

Yeah, I noticed all that in the first shot and just didn't bother burning it down, and the second shot, I didn't notice how close it was until I started editing. lol But I mean, it happens. You get so caught up in the moment that you miss tiny details like that. hehe. Thank you though!

Good photos. The photos themselves have a vintage quality to them that suits the subject. Now go shoot some pics WITH them and post them here.

Honestly, if I had the money and time, I would love to get into shooting film. It seems like you have more passion for your work when you sit and watch it develope in the chemical treatment.

I agree. I have been slacking with my film. I have a fridge full of Trix and Neopan. 40mm also seems to be my favorite focal length. I have never been good a 50mm. I am always to close to my subject.

I know how you feel. My favorite lenses that I own right now are my 50mm F1.8 and my Tamron 70-200mm F2.8. Two fastest lenses I own and the sharpest. But I really could use a better wide angle lens. Something like the 17-55 F2.8 would do nicely!

You can get some really good deals on film cameras these days. The trouble is (for me), what do you do with them after you buy them?

I usually just collect them and set them up. I have a few others that don't work that I just have sitting on my shelf. But I know how you feel. I've only shot film once and that was in school and developed it, but we didn't see the pictures after. I cannot remember for the life of me what types or how much chemical goes into developing film.

    Re: Two really nice Canons.

I got an F4 for less than 175 dollars a couple of months ago. I've shot 5 rolls with it, discovered my film scanner is on the fritz, so I'm trying to get that fixed.

But commercial processing is all I can do, and it's expensive. Their prints suck, if you ask for them on CD they scan at about 1.5 megapixels, so I went with "develop only."

As for that AE-1, one of those was my first SLR, "stolen" in 1982 from a friend of my sister's who got one for his birthday and didn't want it. I jokingly offered him the 90-some bucks I had in my wallet at that moment, and he accepted. Brand new AE-1 with 50/1.4! Deal!

When that was my daily shooter I shot Kodachrome slides. They can't mess those up at the lab! What develops is what you shot!

I'd forgotten how much work (and $$$) film is!!!!

Yep, I kinda laugh every time I hear about film or anyone bought an old film camera to use. I always wonder, what are they gonna do with it and how much will that cost them. Really funny. However, I find the quality of pictures produced by film cameras are way much overrated.

I remember the days when I used film cameras and used to make prints at Walgreens that used to allow people to look at their prints one by one to pay only for the sharp shots, and sometimes I used to end up buying less than five out of the whole film because the rest were not useable and get out of the store very disappointed and stay angry with myself for weeks because valuable pictures that I took in one in a lifetime trip were not any good. At times I used to get so frustrate unable to come up a good one and dump everything (print and film) in a big commercial size garbage can that they had and was usually full of useless prints and films belonged to other frustrated film camera users, pay the film processing fees and get out with nothing. I'd never go back to those days.

    Photo Critique?

Did you want people to give you criticism on these photos or did you just want to share your new cameras with the community? The Photo Critique forum is the one forum where we're pretty strict about what gets posted and what doesn't. We want to make sure that we keep everyone on track in this forum and that it doesn't degenerate into general discussion. Since there's only on critique posted in response to this post, I'm thinking it should be moved to the film photography or the Canon cameras forum. What do you think? Did you want people to offer advice on the photos or shall I move it? Which forum would you like me to move it, too?

Just go ahead and move it. It's moved onto conversation about the cameras instead of about the images themselves. So just move it to the film thread.

Oh - but if you did want it to be about the photos, let's just get it back on track. My comment was as much for the other participants as you

I was amazed that she took $100 for it all. I was stunned, but happy that she did. But from what I understand, this girl has money anyway and doesn't care what she gets for her stuff.

And to geraldb: It does cost a lot of money. I never had the experience of shooting film back in the day so I don't know what it was like. It's more of a every once in a while thing these days. Not an everyday thing.

    Critique

Getting this thread back on track, I will offer a critique here, since Levi did post these in order to get some feedback on the photos and not just the cameras

The thing I like the most about the photos is the shallow depth-of-field and great bokeh. That really makes both cameras stand out from the background. The low angle is also nice. The combination of the low angle and the shallow depth-of-field gives both cameras a sort of iconic status and I think that's in keeping with the post. These photos are about glamorizing these two old film cameras, right? If you'd shot them differently they might have ended up looking like old pieces of junk. But you treated them as objects to be revered and I think it worked out very well.

I like the picture of the AE1 the best, I have the AE1P. In your AE1 picture it makes me feel like the camera is ready to shoot, standing tall in wait for the right moment to engage the shutter. I like the look of the color and the depth of field but I would like to see it a little sharper.

    How can I be lost

    Re: Two really nice Canons.

I actually forgot what forum it was when I posted before.... sorry.

On the first one, I know we're trying for shallow depth of field, but having just a small portion of the leather surface in focus takes away from the picture.

On the AE-1, the Vivitar filter bothers me; I wish it had been removed. I like the effect of shooting it so close, exaggerating its apparent size, though. I'm speaking of how the top and bottom of the case are not parallel but form a pair of vanishing point perspective lines; makes the camera body swell up, "This is a big, capable camera!"

    Re: Two really nice Canons.

Thank you guys. I wanted to sort of put them both up as iconic cameras of the past because I mean, these are some of the cameras that made the cameras we use today. Honestly, I couldn't imagine using one of these with a fair size telephoto lens because of the lack of hand grips. But thank you guys for the comments.

    Re: Two really nice Canons.

I like the shallow DoF and the almost monochrome image of the Canonet, it fits the white camera well.
The light patches in the background are fortunately not as bright as the camera but still a little distracting. Because it's lightly colour shaded it makes the camera stand out.

The AE-1 image is good, but to me has a yellow cast to it, perhaps it's actually greenish from all the foliage around it?
The toning down of the background looks a little too obvious to me, seems to be painted around the camera in the top left corner leaving a little bright halo around it.
