trying to capture the 'bleakness' of the day.

Heres a couple of images I took. I am a university student and dont have a high tech camera, but I work with what Ive got. I hope to take a degree in photography next year if I get accepted. Fingers Crossed.!!

It was in October last year I realised my love for photography so now Im jus trying to get in as much practise and learning for next year.

Any way as the title says I was on my way home today and took a couple of shots. The sun is really strong today so this is a good oprertunity to work on those defining shadows.

This is what Im trying to represent in my pictures. The empty feeling of how winter is slowly disappearing and spring is around the corner. All comments welcome.

Feel free to edit my pictures and show me how I could improve!

Re: trying to capture the 'bleakness' of the day.

    hello titan,

I myself am a university student going for a minor in studio arts (photo) so I'll be glad to help you out here. First off, I recommend not shooting directly into the sun, most of the time. As they say, rules are meant to be broken, but shooting into sun at mid-day you will usually just get silhouettes, a normal sky, and a big bright ball in the middle of the sky similar to what you captured in your second shot.

As far as what you are trying to convey, they don't exactly get across as you're trying to, at least not to me. Many times in photography, especially to appeal to the majority of viewers, your connections have to be somewhat literal. While you no doubt felt the "bleakness" of the day, not knowing what it was like while photographing, one wouldn't be able to get the same feel of the day. Capturing an adjective such as bleak with an image is a very very difficult task.

That being said, I do enjoy your first image. Though not exactly what you were going for, it is a nice image and I would like to see it bigger. Looks to be a bit of a panorama, and I like the lines in the sky. The colors seem pretty decent too, and it's a better capture of what people see every day, which is exactly what some photographers strive for. Taking scenes that people are used to, freezing the moment, and making people look again.

Best of luck with endeavors, and just remember to keep shooting! No good photographer got to where they are now by just reading and viewing. Try and try again!
