    Re: At the Trolley

    Hi GB,
I may have framed trying to avoid the big power pole on the right ( easy to say after the fact )
    Very nice B&W
    nice shallow DOF
    Beautiful model

About the pose, I'm not to crazy of models with hands on their head, i'm sure you took more than one shot

Yep, there does seem to be trade offs: I did look at moving over a bit to the right to aim left and reduce background objects, but that reduced the vanishing point that makes the shot interesting. Ahh. Don't like hands on their head/hair though? I never really thought about the head, but do like shots of models touching their hair, depending on how they do it: here's another that may be bolder.

The sharpness is great and you used the available light very well.

But I have to agree with Armando about the pose. I come from an acting background, so my opinion may be somewhat stilted. If the model touches her hair, I believe it should be for a reason. In both shots, she seems to be touching her hair only because that was her instruction. In other words, she needs motivation, otherwise, it looks too posed.

Lovely photo. Sexy model. Great posture. Great lighting on the woman. The train station works. The only discordant note I see is that we only see one foot. It looks a little like a flamingo to me. (Not a big deal...)

Thanks fellows. Excellent comments that really help me learn. I didn't instruct her to grab her hair but since she was free posing anything can happen. Maybe the hair thing works better on a beach? Thanks for the both feet visible suggestion - I use that for arms, never considered feet.

I agree with the above comments, just thought I would put my 2 cents in there.Pretty model, odd pose for a rail yard.

    How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?

I think the model should be brighter. You should put more light on her (in post-processing if you need to).

    Re: At the Trolley

Tyson - TOTALLY agree on the pose ... nice, but in a railway yard? I think it would be better in a fashionable environment. Not sure if it's a image-killer, but it does make one scratch his head.

AE, agree that the background would need to go high key to make her properly lit. We didn't have a reflector and it was really decided upon at the moment (we were looking for the other photographers who had the outdoor lights. Turns out they weren't at the tram station). Post lighting/lightening may look artificial here, but I guess it's worth a crack at it. Thanks for the observation.

I wish her chin wasn't behind her arm and the she needs to be brighter. You should have used a flash and separated her from the background more.

Greg- Yeah, I see what you mean about the chin, though I don't think it's anything more than a slight 'could have been better' issue. The problem with flash - especially on camera flash - is that it can create a really flat, artificial look if not done right. We had portable off-camera strobes for the class, but the group that had them weren't at the trolley station like we thought they'd be (we later found them shooting someplace else). With on-camera flash, you also have the issue of getting a side shadow when shooting vertical format. I need to buy one of those flash rotation contraptions that allows you to rotate the flash to be above your camera whether you're shooting vertical or horizontal.

I'll post a few more of this model soon, where I was able to use the off-camera strobes (we found that group!) ...
