    Tribute to George Hurrell

A couple of recent portraits done in Hurrell's "old hollywood glamour" style, or at least my interpretation of it in the digital age...

Definitely has that look Jet. They're a bit intense for me personally, but I think they make the statement you intended. Watch the PP, esp on the lower one: I see some evidence of oversharpening or ? on her nose.

I do this style a lot. This is not really the way things were done back then. Hurrell didn't use gaussian blur and unsharp mask.

Nice images but black and white images that have been blurred and sharpened don't make Hurrell style.

First try to get the image right in the camera. The do the minimal you have to in post editing. But of course Hurrell did post editing, but not like this.

Use your DOF for the blur and out of focus stuff and focus on the part you want sharp with the camera.

I NEVER use gaussian blur, it just doesn't look right.

Anyway you can see more at my website in my signature.

here's a few of mine you'll have to copy and paste since I can't yet post links or images)

I also have some videos on my site as well as a write up and video of me when I spent the day with Hurrells last assistant here:

Nice images, good try, not quite there yet.
Oh yeah, I try to use ONLY fresnels for this style of photography, not strobe.

I'll keep your tips in mind, however, not Gaussian blur was used in the editing of these shots. Used Silver Efx pro to introduce 400 speed film grain, and local contrast adjustments. Sharpening was done at RAW output from bridge.

I would LOVE to be able to:
    A) find
    B) afford (replacement bulbs are over $1000)
Those big tungsten stage lights that Hurrell had at his disposal, but that won't be in the cards for a while...

Dude, you can find those old fresnel lights all day long on ebay, and those bulbs aren't 1000$ to replace, I don't know who lied to you but I get mine for less than 50$ sometimes.
search fresnel on ebay. The new ones can be expensive but the old ones that people sometime sell you can get from anywhere from 50$ on up.

Nothing individually to critique, but the two don't work together as part of a series I think, because one emphasizes high key and the other low.

I'll take your word for it, but anything over 8" diameter that I've seen starts in the $500 range in a quick scan on ebay today. Already own Arri and Lowell 6" 1000w units but they don't have the Fresnel lenses, and from what I've read in the books by Vieira & Hicks, Hurrell's were much larger and placed further back.

It's all good, I'll keep at it as time allows...

You don't need anything over 6-8"...Hurrell never used anything more than a 1K Unless it was something huge outside which was very rare.
