I feel the horizontal version is better. It just feels balanced and thought out where the vertical frame seems a bit careless and unbalanced. I would go with the Horizontal.
I feel the vertical would be the better of the two if you had included a bit more background scenery. Rarely does one say "pull further out", but in this case I think getting more of the environment would have made for a better photo.
Having said that, I don't like the horizontal one any better than the vertical one. I prefer the vertical. It has a better sense of balance for me.
You need to put these into context so more of the background is required for me.
