B&W or Color?

B&W, the cut off stack kind of bothers me. Maybe a vertical shot with a better sky.

personally, I really like the colors...They are more of a pastel and the sky is really gorgeous. The b&w looses too much detail for me.

I prefer the colors as well, but, I think it depends what you're going for. The "Tolerance" sign jumps out more in the B&W b/c of the big white area behind it separates it from the rest of the image. The eye goes right there, but then, nothing really takes my attention off of it. That said, I prefer the color because there's much more character to the scene than just the sign. It seems to bring out the modern balconies contrasting with the old style brick and the stack.

I like the color one better. If you feel like messing around, maybe this is one of those shots selective color would work for. I'd try leaving just the fence in color. Just a thought.

I like the black and white better. I think the color would be improved if you could dull out the color of the theater sign (right above TOLERANCE). That is just too bright for the rest of the picture IMO.

I go with the color, cause it more fun looking at color than b/w. I thinks...:/

the building (not smokestack) cut off on the upper left of the color one bothers me, but i think i like the colors better than b&w

I'd say the b&w works better here - looks more urban.

Gary I wonder if you're lens(es) suffer from the same barrel distortion most of mine do: that bottom wall looks curved there. If you had it at a wide angle that would be expected but I've found many zoom lenses distort at any of their focal length settings.

#1. I'm Mark.

#2. That was shot with the Canon 70-200 f4 which is reputed to be mostly distortion free.

#3. The buildings are in Georgetown on the Potomac which is far from distortion free.

Is it distortion free?? You tell me. It is easy to check, just line up the edge of the view's frame to some known straight object - a wall, the horizon, etc - and if it curves, it distorts.

I really don't know about the buildings, btw, but that wall.. that puppy's curving, definitely !. I admit I'm a little more picky about this than most though...

love the shot and subject. If it were mine, I would layer the two together and reduce opacity to allow the color to show through a bit, then bring back all the color to the foreground with the eraser brush. In other words, i like both, but would prefer the color with reduced saturation to the bg, and perhaps a bit of bg blur added as the dof is a bit too much. I want the emphasis on this to be on the signs in the fg, with the bg as suggested environment. . .
good as it is, just my thoughts for improvement.

I like b & w. I think it draws more attention to the "tolerance" sign. Since you named the shot "Tolerance", I am assuming that is your focal point.

They are not shot from exactly the same place on a tripod-although I could always go back and reshoot.

No need, duplicate the color image and convert it to b&w. now you have identical images to work with. . .

I think that's a river in the bottom of the frame. I like the B&W one more. As said above it helps the tolerance graffiti stand out.

right, crop the dark stuff on bottom...I like the colors and architechure, but thats my taste.

I think the wall looks curved because it is curved. Following the bend in the river or road.
