I've never seen these birds before. I thought I was looking at beach toys until I noticed the feathers and differences between the two featured birds. I like the two a lot but find the parts of the third to be a distraction.

I agree, it almost looks like they are fake

i think the third looks wierd how you cant see the head, it almost looks cut off or something

besides that i love the contrast between the colored eyes and mouth on the white/gray feathered body

the water also serves as a nice background

    Very nicely exposed!

I also find the third bird to be a bit distracting. Two would have been better. I am also left wishing for some more DOF and a bit a fill flash to put a spark of life in those beady eyes.

Thank you all for the comments, it was noon but slightly overcast, i thought they would come out poorly, but it seems they were ok.
The third head is a little distracting but you get that.
I have some nice ones that have just two heads, i'll post one here for you, see if it is better?

These are very strange looking birds indeed! i like the first image, except for the third bird! The second, almost feels like they need to be flipped and looking to the right (?)

the third, very cool, but had i not seen the first two w/ full beak, I would be wondering what the beak looked like...

yeah, i'm amazed few of you have seen these birds before.
They are quite common here in Australia. I thought you had a similar species in the USA?
Heres a body shot, so you can see the whole bird.

Hello Jezz. I can't believe how many here have not seen these pelicans before - seems so common here in Adelaide, SA.

You have done a very good job of exposure in all three images - not always easy with the very contrasting feathers etc and reflective backgrounds. I love your capture of colour in one and colour and texture in three. The third bird in the background is distracting in the first image although I feel this is better image of those presented.

    Thanks for sharing
    Focus on the positive!

now that I can look at these pelicans without FREAKING out...they gave me the heebyjeebies---I think the second and the tifghter crop are very good(clone out the bit uf the pelicans butt that shows in the second one(lower to middle left side)

    how close could you get?

Yeah i agree irish, there are heaps of them down here in melbourne. This was taken at San Remo, near Phillip Island. They come in each day for a feeding, got some funny ones of them trying to catch the food.
Thanks Nat, the clostest i got was about 2 metres, so i had any easy time of comp
They just sorta went to the right spots.

Oh well, Heres one of them trying to catch the fish.

    Re: Three in one

Irish, these are endemic to AUSTRALIA, the US has white pelican with a more normal looking eye.

Having seen the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, I too (at first) thought..... WHAT DID HE DO IN PS TO THE EYE????

These images are all way too tight on the framing, but I love the tight head crop !!!!!!!

    Re: Three in one

hey paul, thanks for the comment, the reason they are cropped so tight is because they were surrounded by other palicans, so there would be legs here and tails there, these are the clearer ofthe shots i got. This is one shot i got with a solitary bird, well at least i thought it was! thats what you get for trying to take to meny shots in a hurry!

I really liked the close in shot of the head - it's almost abstract, because of the colours on the bird
