Then & Now - some possible competition entries

Hi all - a local college is sponsoring a competition with the theme "Then & Now". I thought of doing some stuff with a juxtaposition of old and new/ancient and modern. I attach two of them (I am allowed three). One is a huge statue of Ramses the Great in Egypt with a plane taking off in the background. The other is an old Georgian building in London against the backdrop of one of the newest buildings (nicknamed the Gherkin).

    Cheers

That first one...photo of the year so far on this forums IMO. Great juxtaposition, and I'd frame it on my wall. The unbalanced feel is wonderful and the grainy feel is perfect.

    Well done.

WOW! Both great images, but I have to agree that the first one has a huge impact! The juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern is truly special. In addition the composition is spot on as well as the exposure. Enter it, then hang it and the prize it wins on your wall!

The first one definitely has impact with a strong centre of interest and the perfect camera angle.

Ramses the Great has the most WOW power of the 2 IMO not saying that the other is not a quality photo i like it also, just saying that if i had to hang just one of these it would be Ramsey's , The Then & Now as a title is very fitting ,Both are just grand

The ramses photo is incredible, great tones, composition and timing. I am SOOO Jealous! Make it big and hang it where everyone can see it.

Ditto to what everyone else said, the second picture is nice but the first one is excellent. I think that that one should be up for the next sticky on here. Very Well Done!!!!

As has already been stated, the Ramses shot is truly incredible... how long did you have to wait for the plane to fly overhead?

I admit the ramses shot is amazing and I think the shot of the ' gherkin' is just too cramped. Also isn't that modern building the Mayor of London Offices?
I'm glad I can't develop the pictures in my head

Re: Then & Now - some possible competition entries

Hi all .. thanks again for your kind words. Just to answer a couple of questions: I didn't actually wait for the plane - I cheated! The Ramses statue is a huge thing that guards the first pylon at the temple in Luxor in Egypt - I photographed that last April with a fair expanse of sky in it, simply because I had a notion I might do something like this. The plane was shot from my back garden (I live on the flight-path to Heathrow airport).

No, the "gherkin" is not the office of the Mayor of London (his building is nick-named "The Egg"). The Gherkin is one of the nicknames given to the building in the photograph because it is shaped like an upright pickled cucumber. Actually, it has another local nickname which is not so polite - think what used to be referred to as "marital aids"!

    Cheers

I like the first one alot! A plane is the last thing you'd expect to see there.
