I do not think the size of the sign, which I think as you mentioned was the reason behind this image, is getting across to the viewer here. The stores that I see here are usually very large and so I can imagine perhaps that this is a huge sign but there is nothing in the shot that can give me the eye catching, breath taking scale. I'm not sure what you could do differently here to bring that across other than wait for a worker to be standing next to one of the letters on the roof. Taking a shot of someone on the ground in the parking lot with the sign and facade behind them might do it, but I think that would be a bit dull.
I do like how the letters stand out nicely from the sky and clouds. the reflection in the store window is a good little extra. Composition is ok, just not getting across what you wanted.

Bummers that you caught this when the sun was behind the lettering. It would have a lot more pop if the letters were in bright sunlight.
    No, I DON'T need that.

...as I am very new in the Dslr world there's not much words of wisdom I can add, but I just wanted to say it looks very good.

You have got a good eye for photography, I would have gone strait pass it and not taken this photo.

    Well done

It is very dark even the sky is a tad on the dark side. I see what you were trying to do, what I say is go back there when the sun is facing the sign and try it again. Shoot one exactly like it and one with cars in the parking lot that should allow for scale.

the letters in front of the really beautiful clouds look fantastic, otherwise i am not sure about the other signs below. from my point of view they destroy a lot.

    Re: tempe marketplace

i couldnt think of anyway really to show the scale either besides maybe just having that great sky behind it. it's a massive sign that is at the end of the parking lots, not actually above any stores. the part that looks like a reflection is just the same sky behind the signs but discolored by smog. it is very high off the ground also.
i do like the suggestions to try again with a different angle of light. i actually had to combine 2 duplicate layers with one brighter than the other to even get the letters as bright as they are. since im new, lighting is really my biggest problem. so far i've liked posting on here because you really can learn about pretty simple things that you just dont think of. thanks
