Anew,

been looking at this for sometime and something isn't quite right. I think its the very dark hedge which makes the rest of the picture too dark, or it could be the frame.

It could be that the portrait doesn't work and that a landscape would be better with the plane vapour trail cut out and a good part of the hedge.

The mist, powerlines, hills, and orange sky are ok. I do like how the power lines lead you to the telegraph pole whihc then takes you back into the photo.

Sorry to be so vague.

I also came back to this shot a lot times. I thought it was my kinda shot (or the shots that my eye likes best) from the first viewing and still think so. I think it's very well spotted, composed and taken.

Couple of things though, there's a bit of a brown cast over the image and the dark area at the bottom could've been shrunk a bit more. I don't think all of it is needed here.

Also I agree with Roger that the frame might have gotten it even darker. A large white border IMO works best for this kind of shot.

I actually like the plane's exhaust in this shot quite a lot.

Also, the depth of this photo is what makes it for me. Good job.

Roger - after consideration i think you're right about the hedge at the front, a little on the dark side and possibly too much of it. thanks for you're careful consideration of the image and reflections on it.

Leels - agree with you and roger on the frame (wasn't sure about it either, and messed around with it a few times) I hadn't noticed the brown cast myself, until now! it's hard to spot these things sometimes...i personally like the plane trail aswell. Thanks for you're well thought out critique.

I've enclosed a landscape version of the image (without the plane trail, and a light border), just for interest.

I think that an even deeper crop (bringing the lines on the right into the corner) would make it even stronger. I don't know if the pole needs so much space to the left of it. But my tastes are a wee bit off.

The portrait orientation works for me. I'd just like to see more sky and less dark along the bottom. However I'm talking just a little more.

Portrait for me by far. Why not make the portrait a little smaller by removing a bit of the dark area from the bottom. Removal of the plane trail I consider to be a bad idea. I actually like the black border but would I think have reduced the white border to a pencil line. This shot is a great example of, where with a good eye, the simplest and even uninteresting subjects can be turned into beautiful photographs.

Nice image, anew. I have to put myself in with those that would prefer the image cropped in landscape format with the lighter frame. That just makes a much more pleasing image to me. You have definitely taken something everyday oridinary and made it into a very nice image.

Aaargh! Note to myself (Must explain myself better )

I like the vapour trail its just I couldn't see it working in a landscape it would have been an awkward dimension - but hello there is more to the right of the picture and to the left in the landscape.

Anew play around with the crop to see what comes out best and by the way its definately the black frame that spoils this photo looking at the landscape. Try keeping the portrait, crop the black, leave the top and get rid of the frame and it could look good.

thanks for all the comments guys, great to get all this feedback.

i personally prefer the portrait format with this one, and i've enclosed the traditional 10x8in crop here, which i think works best. I've reduced the black at the bottom, and it's balanced better, i think!

thanks again for all your help on this one guys, would never have thought of trying a landscape version of it, and it's helped me look at it in different ways to which i normally would.

Having looked at this newest version, I have to say that I don't mind the portrait quite as much. I think a lot of it had to do with using the black frame on it earlier. This 8x10 version looks really nice and the plane trail does not bother me all that much here. Nice job, anew.

I spend a lot of time trying to avoid taking pics with those cursed telegraph lines in them and here you have them in on purpose and it works !! well done and good framing. Landscape for me.
