Nice! Bounced flash, when possible (small enough room) always gives better result than direct flash. This is very nice, although a bit dark on the other side of the face.
Bouncing into the area where wall meets ceiling often provides very nice result as opposed to directly at ceiling.
Did you use a diffuser? The small plastic cap, (Stofen Omni-bounce) is ideal for this as it allows a small amount of direct flash to catch lights in the eyes and hit the subject and also bounces the flash about the room and ceiling. Also come in green, warm yellow and clear for various ambient lighting matches.
The dog does not look to happy about the big eyed thing looking at him and flashing that darn bright light disturbing his sleep
but ... I did the same last night ...
Other than bouncing the flash from a surface up and to the side to get better illumination , I'll say move the dog to a better environment
What I do is put the dog in a more suitable place than under the table where she usually sleeps and goes to hide when I start chasing her with the camera, to lead her somewhere I use some of the food she usually eats. I'll give her some after each shot and ask her to be stay, it works for a few shots.
Last night I bounced the flash from a rear wall, slightly to the side and got some interesting light , take a look at my gallery if interested in the shot.
You can also use the SB600 off camera by setting the camera flash as a commander (Nikon Creative Lightning System features) , but, shield the camera flash from hitting the dog eyes or you'll get very bright green eyes, difficult to correct in PP, I just put my hand in front of the camera flash.
If the wall is too far, and you have a willing subject bring a large white board and bounce the flash against it
I haven't bounced a flash in a long time but I learned to keep back from the subject and zoom giving room for the bounce to work. Adjust exposure too. Gary is right as well about diffusing the flash. Tougher to do with film though.
I am like Barney Fife, I have a gun but Andy makes me keep the bullet in my pocket..
Gosh I want a flash so bad...a better tripod, at least three different lenses...flash would be a great start though. I am so tired of getting overexposed shots! I had a pug just like that when I was little. She's a cutie
Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper. The photographer begins with the finished product.

Because I have two teen age kids money is short around the house, I just knew I wanted a brand name flash for my Nikon. I have a Pro Master flash for my Olympus and it is junk in compairison to the Nikon Sb-600. The quality of the build and image quality just after one use is amazing. I was impressed with the Nikon built flash.
