    Perplexed Pelican

Met this character while out for a walk at the zoo, I liked the dark background and this suspicious eye looking back at me...any thoughts?

    Thanks

    Hi Herriot,
Yes, you are right. The eye of the bird is really the essence of this shot. Very interesting!

I like his wary eye and the patterns of the wet feathers. You've caught him well.
Now duck and run before some bird nerd comes along and yells at you for calling this pelican a stork.

Nice capture against the dark background. There's beautiful detail in the feathers.

Chunk - too true about those bird nerds...

Oh dear!! I stand corrected, you are completely right, I had the word 'suspicious' in my mind and 'stork' fitted, perhaps I should have been thinking 'perplexed', thanks for correcting!!!

The dark background, as has already been mentioned, helps your capture stand out well. Well framed with good detail.

    Good catch.

I can certainly see why you did this photograph, I probably would have too!
    This is a fine photograph.
The contrast of the bird against the dark background is great.
The framing is good. Great texture in the feathers.

Very nice! Looks like a studio shot. Disgusted describes its expression to me.

Herriot, I have to tell you that I usually don't really care for animals/birds photography.
But, I find this one to be plain fascinating. The dark background might have something to do about it but the magic here (as I see it) comes from the remarkable diffuse lighting, your careful crop and the color treatment. Finally, a shot were colors doesn't explode. It works superbly well.

Great review seb, I agree. The more I look at it, the more I love it. THe photo has an elegant feel that you usually don't get with animal shots.

Lovely subtle use of colour here, fits nicely with that black background.
