    Sunrise on Black Friday

This time of year the lake levels are low. They dam up more water upstream. It leaves small islands along the shore. I tromped thru the mud for this one.lol
I had rather tromp thru the mud on Black Friday and enjoy a sunrise rather than fight a crowd in hopes of the dream deal at Walmart that no one ever seems to get. I know a marketing scam when I see one. Bait and switch is what I call it.lol

I like this one because of the way the sun rays are and the tree. It reminds me of when i use to fish, very quiet.
    What a peaceful shot.

Much to like about this one. Great composition and colors. The sun rays without the potential lens flare are very nice as well. The silhouettes are nice and fully black, as they should be in this type of shot....I would like it just a tad sharper, but I think low qual .jpg's take some it away ...either way, cool!

Greg this is a very calming and serene picture. You have great photographic opportunities around where you live and you take great advantage of them. A big print of this I imagine will bring out wonderful detail, especially in that tree.
    Very well done.

It's peaceful, Greg. Not novel in any way, but a solid sunrise.

I don't know ... I think some shots of crowds and the chaos that goes along with Black Friday sales would make a mighty interesting shot, if one could stand all that (I obviously didn't, or I would be posting it ). Last year I hit a Walmart at 6am and there was a traffic jam one and half blocks from it, with fellows in orange vests carrying flashlights directing traffic to parking spots several blocks away. Maybe the sunrise was a better choice!

Thanks Tom, thanks GB. I have thought about taking pictures of the crowds on BF. I think I would just be adding to an already bad problem.lol

Okay, I am about to show my lack of expertise.

When I try to take a sunrise/set, I either get a blowout pic from too much sun, or too dark when I try to compensate. How is one able to balance foreground and background when shooting into the sun? Is there another forum better suited for this question?

This is the perfect place for the question that's why we do this. I am not the best at it but here is how I handle it. First if I let the sun get above the horizon to me it's to late. The sun becomes a big blob. Nice for a web shot but bad for large print. Second, I use a two stop, soft, Cokin ND grad. I set exposure and then hold the filter in front of the lens making sure it darkens the areas I want and then shoot. I protect the highlights because once they are blown there is no fixing it. The darks can always be brought up in post. I hope this helps.
I learned this from a publc television program. A photographer was taking pictures in Africa and that's how hw done it.

Wow - you managed to capture the shot at the exact moment the sun was setting. Was that color the result of post-processing or is this straight out of the camera? Great photo.

The color was very close to what you see. I think I may have warmed it up some with the white balance but that's it.
