i don't post in the critique section much, but id like to know what you guys and gals think about this one. Taken on my trip to the outer banks this past weekend. Let me know what you think, good or bad, room for improvement?


oh yeah and ignore the copyright words, its the best i could do in paint (im currently inbetween editing programs).

It's a nice pretty shot, but pretty boring and overdone. I feel this way about almost all sunset pictures, so take it for what it's worth. Some kind of real subject would be nice. perhaps a boat, fisher, bird, house, chair, whatever will put it beyond "pretty picture" and turn it into a more interesting photo.

Different subjects, but photos like Tuna's I could look at for hours. There's so much to think about in each one with well placed subjects. I think OldClicker posted a somewhat standard pictures of bees, but with a small explanation of the subject it made them a lot more interesting. Just something to think about. EDIT: Someone else had a picture of a dock a long time ago (maybe GB1) and by placing a pair of shoes on the edge of it, it turned the picture from "meh" to "hmm I wonder who left their shoes here/where they are" and by doing that, I spent more time looking through the picture/enjoying it. There's also a wonderful silhouette picture like this from a long time ago of a beach scene with lots of people/dogs/birds/action. I'm not saying it has to be an action shot, just something more than standard weeds and a sunset.

Hey! I think this is an awesome sunrise picture! I like sillouettes and I like the line of the grass. My only nitpick would be the horizon line in the backround could be straightened just a tad.

haha, I expect and desire critique. I assume everyone else posting here does too. You already know the picture is pretty, so it's what's beyond about it that matters imo. See my first post. The second post was why I believe it wasn't getting the desired volume of responses.

When a pic is well done, why does it matter if it has been done before? Calling a fellow's work "boring" is really disrespectful and quite irrelevant in my opinion. I think this forum is designed to critic the pic itself and that is a beautiful picture.

As members of the "creative" community we all need to develop thick skin. It's the only way anyone ever gets better at their chosen craft. Recently, I was given a copy of PPA's critique sheet. It's a 12 point guideline for scoring professional photographer's entries at their Salons (competitions). The VERY FIRST item on the list, which goes in order of importance is *Impact* or *Wow factor* the SECOND item on the list is *Creativity*. Therefore, even if "boring" may not be the politically correct term du jour, it is HIGHLY relevant in my opinion, as is the fact that it's been done a million times before. There isn't any reason not to shoot something that's been "done to death" but if you know that going in, it's incumbent upon you to do it better, and more creatively than the thousands that did it before you.

the reason i post shots here is to get a truthful critique. if it doesn't work for him because its over done thats great that he told me, thats what i wanted to know. Just telling me its a "nice photo" is not very helpful at all.

Well if it dont matter to you then it wont to me, case closed. I still stand behind my previous post though since it s not the first "critique" of this kind from the same person. Next time I would keep it to myself.

John, Chaman, thanks, I appreciate your intentions to keep things on a civil and respectful note here. While I agree that Caleb was blunt and to the point I don't think he was being disrespectful here. I think Jetrim said it quite well.
We can all agree that this is a pretty scene. Simple, great color, nice framing and strong silhouettes. Yes, it has been done a zillion times and so what Caleb is saying is to get a new take on this, have that something extra or different to make it not so ordinary. I think its a valid critique and I would agree with it. The choice of the word "boring" might not have been the most tactful way of putting it, but it was not off the wall. Dylan, it looks to me like you took it the right way.
