I've seen some really great photos on this board in the few weeks I've been on here, but this one really impresses me. There is so much goodness going on here. The lighting, the story, the background, the foreground. If anything, his coat kind of "clumps" into the straw, if that makes sense. But it took a lot of looking to come up with that.
I don't know you how you did this, but I am impressed to pieces. What a terrific photograph. If this does not get a sticky for next week, you were robbed. Wonderful work. I can only hope to produce a photo like this someday.
Awesome stuff Dray! If I had one micro nit-pick it would be to warm up the skin tone to match the ambient light of his surroundings, but that's a real stretch to find something to quibble about.
Thanks, guys. Actually, this image looks basic and bland compared to what I really wanted to do. Too bad I didn't have a second model on hand. Can't get that other idea out of my head. Oh well.
Clumped coat - might be able to fix that, depending on precisely where the offending clump is. Wouldn't be easy, but could probably be done.
Skin tone - easy enough fix, I think. I saw that very problem as soon as I posted here and nearly reposted. Also need to fix the skin tone of the hand to match the face. Again, easy enough.
FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPH, ONE OF YOUR BEST and that says a lot. STICKY FOR SURE!!

if this doesn't stick, it's all rigged because this is AWESOME!!! You have every last detail nailed. The only thing I can offer is that the lighting appears to be very late day (or maybe very early morning) but he's not that warm. But that's just to nitpick because it's GORGEOUS!

Reason: Sticking as featured photo. July 19, 2010
Thanks, Frog. That can be done. Where were you thinking?
I'm also wondering if I should dim/fade the moon a little.
I was thinking closer to the tallest peak but still to the right of it.
I don't know for sure. Its fine where it is too...just thought it would be a little more noticeable if a little closer in....but then maybe viewers eyes wouldn't travel as much.
Holy crap... thanks Gary and everyone! And this wasn't even a shot that I was all that psyched about in the beginning.
Is there a magenta bias, btw? I just calibrated my display, but colorwise it still seems to lean in that direction. Just wondering what everyone else sees.
David - no, not an HDR. I tried a 7-frame HDR of this very spot and it didn't come out too badly. Something I'll definitely be doing more of with landscapes.
Thanks again!

Initially I thought so, but it isn't apparent in the foreground which leads me to believe it's an optical illusion brought on by the magenta from the sky.
Congrats on the sticky as well, as always, quite well deserved!
Very powerful image. It deserves the sticky! Nice work.
Ideas for improvement: The sunglasses hide his eyes which reduces impact, so maybe those could go. Perhaps a little too much blur in foreground and back. Skin tone's a little blandish white. Like Frog, I think the moon's too small to contribute, and maybe he is too left and the moon too far right, creating too much of a gap in the center? Splitting hairs, I know. Maybe that's the mark of a good image where someone has to nit pick?
