    Sulfur Mountain

This one was taken last summer in late august at the summit of Sulfur Mountain in Banff, Alberta. We reached Banff at 4:30am after a serious road trip that started in Victoria (this one was taken arround 8:30am).

    Please criticise.

    Hey Seb

Two quick thoughts - take out the bench on the right side and crop off the top a little to give a more "panoramic" feel.

    Just my thoughts.

I totally agree with Rick that the piece of table MUST GO. It is really distracting.

However, I am not sure that a pano frame will work here. I played with it in PS but it didn't give anything particular. In my final version, I kept the squarish format. I also brightened the FG+ mountains .

But the biggest improvement I could get was when I switched to BW. Because there is not much color in the pic, keeping this 'info' can actually distract the viewer. You might want to try this?!

    Cheers,

    Steph.

    Hello Rick,

I agree about the bench. I should have removed it at the first place. I am not sure about your "panoramic" suggestion though. My intuition (or perhaps lack of lol...) told me that the square format was right here.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

    Hi there,

While I do usually hike I must confess that I went the (very) lazy way that morning.
    Oh well!!!

    Hello Stephane,

Quite frankly, I don't feel this picture in b&w but I sincerly thank you for taking the time to play with the picture in order to improve it. Actually, I liked the particular muted colors and the unique light of the mountains but that's just me.

Here are two reworked version, the same crop in b&w and in colors. I brightened the two people and slightly boosted saturation on the colors version.

    Everybody's comments are welcome.

    Hello Almo.

I assume that you are reffering to the thing that the guy is holding in is left hand. This is actually an umbrella but eh, who wouldn't enjoy a quality refreshment at such an high altitude???

Well actually I was just refering to the feeling that this image gave me the first time I looked at it. But I do kinda' like the illusion of a wine bottle in the guys hand. It adds to it for me.

The long road trip must have tired you out

As for the picture I think that no picnic tables is better...
Its a little less photographic and a little more... artistic, but I think it works pretty good, hope you don't mind me playing around... I took away the blue sky because it lets you focus more on the interesting lighting going on, I think that black and white also detracts from the lighting, well here it is:

While I take the risk to appear close minded, I still prefer my colours sqare crop (the second version that is). There is just something about the lighting (and how it interact with the foreground) that make me feel good about the scene.

That being said, I sincerly appreciate the time and effort that you put into your reply. I enjoy your crop and definately don't mind that you have played with the picture.

    regards

Oh, this is absolutely fine with me! The color version is nice too. In which case, I would really advise you to boost the contrast of the FG+mountains and tone down the sky. I think you'll like the result. Brightening the two FG figures was a good idea. It works well.

I would also desat. the cyan channel, mostly so that the water bottle on the table does not have this cyan sparkle in it. You might want to clone it out, but there is a bit of work involved then.

    Amities!

The cyan channel eh? That is a neat observation. I haven't noticed it at all! Thank you for pointing this out and for your others suggestions. I'll definately give it a try.

    salutations!!

    Re: Sulfur Mountain

I vote for keeping it in color, but going with the cropped square shot. Looks really nice. Makes me wish I didn't take a trip to Banf for my work this summer when I had the chance...
