    Storm Clouds

Hello all. My mom just recently picked up a digital SLR, and caught a great pick of a thunderstorm with it. She's too shy to show her work to anybody but me, so I thought I would post here to share comments/crits with her.
Amazingly, she actually got the lightning bolt on the auto setting. And, yes, I lightened the foreground in Photoshop.

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Re: Storm Clouds

its definately a neat scene...hmmm..I might like to see the foreground a little less lightened. I think the sky is the story here and the foreground should convey the darkness and aura of the approaching storm..less yellow..more darker foreboding brown. Ok..I'm a hopeless romantic..! A very nice catch and congrats to your mom...quit screwing up her pics..just kidding.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!
    Thx, Rod

Terrific shot and composition. Excellent luck on getting the lightning strike! i agree that the fg could be darker to gather the mood some more. Your mom looks to have a great eye for composing a scene.

    Thanks for the responses!
I guess I did got a little carried away with the foreground. Photoshop lightens everything quite a bit when I save for web. Irritating.
I've dropped the foreground back quite a bit, originally, it was nearly black. I'm worried that it's going to be too dark, so I don't know if I'd like to darken more than this. Let me know if this helps the mood for you.

    Thanks, Chuck

    Chuck-
This is an awesome photo and I agree with your first Photoshop edits. I don't think it looks bad. I think you did a good job.

However, this is a serious photography site and photos are sacred, private property. For that reason, it's not ok to post someone else's photo for any reason. Not even your shy mom's. Your mom has to post the photo herself. Please encourage her to register and post the photo herself. This is a wonderful, welcoming, and friendly community. We love new photographers and she has nothing to fear.

Thanks for sharing your mom's great photo and thanks for understanding. I know you meant well. Now show your mom this post and get her to register and start posting!

    Re: Storm Clouds

I love this shot. I like the original one the best. IMO, the other one is just a tad too dark.

We're glad you're here - and we'd like to have your mom here as well! Maybe if you tell her how much everyone likes her photos, she would consider coming here as well.

I like the both of them but darkening the foreground did make a difference but I liked them both. Unreal shot. Have you got any more to show us Joyce? Lets see what else you can show us.

Just back off hols and what a shot to start with - Love the lighting in the darker version and the composition is excellent - the lightning is the icing on the cake.

Well done and welcome on board.

Looking forward to seeing a lot more.

    Re: Storm Clouds

Chuck - I like it overall and think it's a great capture, but there are a few things that I think hurt it. I feel that it's slightly tilted/rotated to the right/CW direction -- what do you think? And although the sky is incredible, I feel that there's perhaps too much of it. The house may be too small in the photo, as the lightning may be.. it's really like three photos in one. The main problem with that is that the center is so empty. Hmm. Yeah, just empty there. I would also PS out those telephone lines: they're distracting. Finally, I might add a little contrast to the image.

I guess this critique shows that a good shot can still have a few issues. But overall, it is dynamic and eye catching. It is definitely a keeper. -GB
