How awful is the composition? I know it's cluttered but I can't find a crop that I like.

Ah...there's the photo.

Not too cluttered at all. Nice seperation of the young man's face from everything else as his expression is what stands out. The artwork (small statues?) might be a distraction, cutting into his legs but more important to have captured the moment.

Possibly a crop to his upper torso to eliminate those distractions? Maybe something like this...though it may not be the message you wanted your photo to have...
