    insecticide?
Looks a bit soft overall, like perhaps it was front focused on the web.

    HA HA about the insecticide.

I don't know why it turned out soft looking, I had my F/ stop maxed out at an F/32, and I had my camera mounted on a slide rail to focus in on the hairs of the legs.
I know I had my 50 mm macro lens on my 2x doubler to get in closer.

    my 2x doubler
That might be the problem. Lenses have sweet spots in both focal length and aperture (the sweet spot for focal length doesn't apply for prime lenses, obviously). So at the extremes, even good lenses will look crappy.
The second thing is the 2x teleconverter. General principle is more glass = less clear since it's somewhat of a domino effect for image quality.

    slide rail to focus
If this is a macro focusing rail, you could try to stack (I have used PTGui with very little success! but that's user error more than anything). Tip for stacking from my experiences is to plan to stack images left to right instead of on the Z axis. (An example of a stack that isn't going to work via an automatic program is like a portrait where tip of nose, eyes, and hairline are on different focal planes.)

edit: To make the last sentence more clear... say "1" is in focus and 2, 3, 4 are different degrees of softness. If you take four images like:
    1, 2, 3, 4...
    2, 1, 2, 3...
    3, 2, 1, 2...
    4, 3, 2, 1

The image will turn out good with PTGui as it will easily take slices of the four images and put them together to make the final image like 1, 1, 1, 1 (fully focused throughout the frame)

But... If you go with images that are like:
    2, 4, 1, 2
    1, 3, 2, 1
    3 , 1, 4, 3

It probably won't turn out well even though you have all the areas covered. That's from my experience with the program. I only tried to do maybe 10 macro stacking shots and I had a lot of trouble using the program though. Also, rereading this, I hope that makes some sense because I am horrible at conveying my thoughts through words

edit #2: I use CombineZM. It's almost identical to PTGui in function but free.
