Some more of the canadian rockies

Here is another "atmospheric" shot of my journey in late august. This is straight out of the camera. I didn't thought that it needs any post processing nor could I figure out what to try on it anyway.

    Please comment.

    Seb,

Living in the Northwest U.S. I often have to deal with gray skies. I personally don't care too much for these kind of photos in color. You might try converting to black and white.

The water in the foreground doesn't really draw me in to the photo. You might try different objects in the foreground.

What is the subject? Is there something you can focus on a little more?

These kind of days also have lots of potential for changes in the weather. If you waited, could you get some sun rays coming through?

I hope you enjoyed your travel through the area.

    Hi Jo,

I guess that I see your point. Living so far away from the west coast, these kind of landscape had a lot of interest for me but you made me realize why some others people may not care about it. I'll try to rework the framing to see what I can come with.

Enjoying my journey in B.C. would be an innacurate way to put it. I actually felt like moving there asap lol.

    Thank you for commenting.

    Hi Seb,

I agree with Jo. II've played a bit with your original post. I cropped half the sea and a big chunk of the sky. I ended up with a pano looking pic that was really cool. I converted it in BW and it's really nice. This would be definitely interesting to make a print out of it. I can post it here if you'd like.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

Go ahead, I'd be pleased to see what you have done. I personally tought about adjusting levels to give more impact to the sky and crop some water in the foreground while sticking to a casual format.

Going panoramic sounds like a good idea.

Here it is! I think this has quite an appeal to it.

BTW, was this shot at Horseshoe Bay?

Re: Some more of the canadian rockies

Well, I like the original post for the simple reason that i can "feel" the atmosphere in the scene and I like all the water and sky.The dramatic clouds bring me right from the top of the frame all the way out to the mountains in the horizon. And when I look out into the middle to see the light house, being as far out and small as it is in the scene, gives me more of a feeling of space. . .vast depth and sort of a feeling of a dreary lonely. It entertains me, gives me a mood. I like what Steph_B has done but I like the full frame more. Although the b&w conversion looks good here. Maybe a slight levels adjustment, but nothing more. Just my opinion, but I like it as it is and feel the mood of this scene. Good work

I agree with the levels adjustment. I gives a more dramatic sky, better detail in the distant mountains, and a less muddy overall feel. I think the original framing is fine although the crop that was done is also a nice interpretation, but the original seems to have the viewer more in the scene rather than viewing the scene.

    Nice work Seb.

    Hey Steph,

You did a superb job here! I sincerly love it. This was indeed shot from Horseshoe Bay while I was heading for Victoria. I gotta rework my original for myself but I don't think that I can do any better than that.

Thanks Gary and Chunk for your comments. I am glad to see that you perceive the scene as I did.

Seb, The focal point for me ( in the original post) was the clouds, and I found the piece hanging off into the water (lighthouse? Wow thats small) to be distracting... I'm not sure why, at first when i saw it i didn't like that part of it, wanting to see just a monotone landscape, but on further inspection, the dark trees didn't bother me. Can't quite put my finger on why the land/dock jutting out disagrees with me...
Then I saw SB's version, and it brings out the clouds even more, it seems, would have to agree that I like the Black and white version.
BTW, there is a "Horseshoe Bay" in Texas as well... its a town in Central Tx, ( Hill Country)

It is very interesting to compare Seb's original with the B&W interpretation. In some ways I find the B&W more dramatic, but I find it easier to "relate" to the original. It makes me feel more like I'm really there instead of looking at a picture of somewhere.

Due to the lack of vertical depth in panoramic formats, it is always difficult to feel like you are in the frame... I guess this is something to consider when choosing a particular format. In a way, it feels more like a painting of sort.... Thanks for pointing this to me (us).

    Cheers,

    Steph.

I'm glad you liked it! It has quite a bit of ... inner light, isn't it? I'm looking forward to more of your posts! He... you are giving me ideas for outings!

    Thanks!
