    Some Hockey Pictures.

Here are some shots of my son during last weekend's tournament. They are pretty tight crops and were taken at ISO-800 so they are a bit grainy. They were taken with my 50mm 1.8 lens because my zoom couldn't get good enough shutter speeds.

Interesting shots Mpreslar. My favourite is the last one, the facial expression is great. The colors are off quite a bit for me, and the others don't do much for me (color + motion blur).

The pictures might be able to be improved with some sort of post processing, but it would take some playing with.

The camera is a Canon Digital Rebel. The lens here was the EF 50mm 1.8. The lighting in the ice rink was hiddeous and I couldn't get better than 1/30 with my 300mm zoom lens.

These are also cropped very tight, partly because of the 50mm lens but also to eliminate any players but my son. If they were pros or even older players it would be different, but I won't post pictures of this age kids without their parent's consent.

I can see the light was weird colours, patchy too, I think you did well to get these.
I too like that final picture the most.

They look to me like they may be underexposed.
Did you shoot raw, or jpeg?
If you used raw you have more latitude to adjust the image later.

The meter expects an average scene, and with all that white ice it isn't average.
If you use the histogram to check after your shots you should have the peak white of the ice all the way over to the right.

This article isn't about sports, but it is a very good explanation http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tu...se-right.shtml

Marty, the lighting being what it was and the equipment available to you, you did ok. I also think the last one is the better of the bunch. As another stated already, these shots are underexposed , because of the white ice. The cameras exposure meter was tricked by ther mass of white ice into reducing it's brightness, when in actuality one would desire the ice to be white. This would also expose your sons face further as well. Raising your EV value about a full fstop over the cameras recommended exposure would have been a good start, but then your shutter speed would have been reduced even further. So, this is a tough situation , and overall you came back with something worth while

    Re: Some Hockey Pictures.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I was shooting JPEG. I usually shoot RAW, but with the number of shots I was taking and the quick turn around from day to day I felt then need for more space. I should have plenty of opportunities to practice next year, since my son is planning on playing travel hockey.
