Some black and Whites with film...

Hi Folks...I have been shooting and learning film. I am at the crawling phase, but none the less, here are a couple...CC welcome.
Shot with Pentax K1OOO and BW Kodak 400 pro film C-41.

Hey J - The second one doesn't do it for me, but I really like the first. It has incredible depth (and strong vanishing pt) plus excellent texture and architecture. It just needs a different subject than the invisible woman :biggrin5: Seriously, it's fine as is but I think it would be a great local to take and do a model shoot at. The only thing I would change here is perhaps use a slightly wider angle and show a little more openness on the left side. That's it!

Btw, I'm not sure there's that much difference between shooting film and shooting digital. You have to add your own filters etc to the film, then scan it. Proper development is a consideration also. You sure found yourself a flintlock there with the K1000  ...

I think someone sitting on the bench in the distance would help on the first, but still a good shot. I like #2 for the mood it sets. Nice work, Yes, the K1000 is a wonderful camera to own.

J, as a film shooter I applaud you for also using film, but these shots to me reflect the primary weakness of the chromogenic B&W film- its lack of range. Neither of these shots has the amount of pop you would get with tri-X or FP4 or even Pan-F. And unfortunately even when printed in a darkroom, the C41 stuff is still way flat. Scanned- it's even worse. I've sworn off that stuff in spite of its convenience.
So with the negative part out of the way... I much prefer the second shot. Of course I wish it was more contrasty, but I like the angle and the dark tones. Gives it a nice old-fashioned feel which is supported by the subject matter. If I were to suggest one improvement in the future, I'd say shoot it with a little more sky for a little added drama. Well done, though.

Definitely prefer the first picture..... Great DOF and love the architecture....... 2nd shot, don't really care for it...... kind of seems like you stopped on the side of the road and couldn't get closer.... It is just lacking something for me. But FANTASTIC job on the first!!

Hi Folks, Thanks for the CC. It really does help.
As for the second image, I was as close to it as I could get.

I think film or digital, the elements for a good photograph are the same. I don't see how simply because a photograph is shot with film would make it a better one than that shot with a digital camera. And I did shoot with b&w film and made prints in the darkroom before

If I have to choose between these two photos, I'd pick the first one for the reason that I think the composition is better; it's a simple and effective composition that any introductory photo book will recommend. And for that reason, it's an easy pick for me

Re: Some black and Whites with film...

Back in the day when I shot in film, I liked using color film and printing them in B&W. The range and depth was so much nicer. I miss film somtimes, but the things you can do with digital imaging is AMAZING!

Very nice shots. I like the first one a BUNCH and think it would be nice with a person sitting in the bench or maybe a small child running away from the frame...but it has merit as is. The second feels a little hazy, but as mentioned before it kind of allows an aged feel. Very nice.

These shots are awesome. The one on top is by far the best with your use of lines and angles to compose the perfect shot, but the second one isn't lacking either, I think what the problem with it is that you put it up with a breathtaking photo, simple as that.
