The open water has a lot of potential. I like the scene overall, looks like quite the place to visit.

I have to stop commenting here, because I cannot improve this either. I am sorry, but it is pretty much perfect.

I love the way this photo draws you in. At first it's peaceful and then you start noting things, like the crucifix and the nice repetition of the bridge supports. Very engaging.

What do you mean by "potential?" Is there something that you think should be happening in the water that isn't? Please try to articulate what you mean so we understand better. It will also help you understand better when this same opportunity presents itself to you

The water. . ..it needs a duck. No, wait, a swan, a white swan with the city's light perfectly highlighting the feathers along its neck as it gracefully dips its head in observance of a perfect evening captured in a perfect picture. . .

I'm just kidding P-J. I really like this photo.

    Re: Soft Light

    I like it, too

And I agree it's hard to find anything wrong with it. But n8 mentioned "potential," which imples something is missing or could be improved. I'm encouraging him and everyone else here to step up and make this critique forum even better.

I do think the water is sort of a big emtpy space in this photo. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it wasted space. But there is, to use n8's word, untapped potential. I think a lighted boat might really be the final detail that turns this up to 11. I also can't help but wonder if warming it up just a teeny bit would help. The cool tones are accurate, I'm sure. But I guess I just like things a hair warmer - even when it's not accurate.

I think you are right about the water. A smallish boat of some sort just floating out there or quietly drifting would really have added to the "story" I think. Otherwise, I'm having a hard time finding anything else to critique on this.

I can see where John and RIdgetop are coming from. And I agree.

On the other hand, I just love the texture in the water. It's beautiful and really adds something, moodwise, to the image for me. I wish I could be more specific than that. L-shape is no bother at all.

Great work. I really especially dig what's going on in the upper right of the frame.

    Re: Soft Light

I love this photo, all the elements are there and the mix of artificial and natural light is trully stunning, however to me something feels unnatural about the way the river hits the bridge. Maybe it is a by product of the long exposure, maybe post processing or maybe the natural shadows under the bridge but it as a very harsh edge next to the river that keeps drawing me away from the rest of the shot. I don't know if this would kill your composition but if you moved to the right a bit so that the bridge face opened up a bit, that might make it less harsh.

This is a nit pick however, the shot is still fantastic.

I like the great colors and soothing exposure, and the L shaped background makes for great supporting cast. But where's the main actor? There's a lot of empty space there .. But I think you already know this.

    Re: Soft Light

    I like this.
Makes me think of Nurnburg (near the christmas market).
And of fiendishly difficult jigsaws, where the sky is possible but that water is almost impossible. I'd say make it a 5000 piece jigsaw

The sharp edged light on the water on the left bothers me.
Cropping it from the bottom to take that out makes everything else too centred.

Nit-picking, but I'd like a little more detail and contrast in the clouds (and probably in the water too) where there's currently almost blobs of mid-grey.

    Re: Soft Light

Thanks guys. Yeah, there aren't any main actors. hence why i wasn't so sure about this image. but i'm glad it calms a lot of you. I like that.

I hadn't noticed the sharp light / shadow transition at the bottom, it's just how the light fell in that area. Thanks for pointing that out.

I like the fact that it isn't so contrasty paul. i was going for a soft image where things are mostly medium tone with colour variations to add the necessary contrast in colour rather than tonality.

    thanks guys ! :-)

Really lovely. I think the L shape actually works, creating a frame for the water.
