I haven't seen the color version, but I do like this in b&w. I find myself a tad distracted by the background on the left, but this probably wasn't something you could control. His hand holding the cigarette is terrific.

My favourite from you so far Juergen, great expression and the black and white brings out some great tones.

    Thanks for sharing

I like the expression, pose & composition. But the tones are still a bit to grey. IMO, it needs a bit more contrast (especially a white spot). There seems to be a light halo around the guy's head and hand on my screen as well.

I did not have the pleasure of seeing the colored version, but the mono version is very nice work, it shows alot of detail.

It seems to me oversharpened, with light haloes, perhaps form the JPEG compression, but it doesn't look as good as I think it ought to from what I remember of the colour original.

    Jurgen.

You really are in a lovely location for photography with so many interesting subjects.

I like the photojournalism/photodocumentry thing you have going.

However, this photo needs a bit more contrast and something done about the chaps halo, it doesn't look natural. Never saw the colour version.

    Composition is spot on

From an un-photographical type of perspective:
    I like the 'contradiction' myself.
When I think of Buddhist monks I think of a person on the path to enlightenment...becoming pure. Then here you have an old monk 'poisoning' himself.
    Very paradoxical. I like it.

Hi saint,,there is nothing in a Buddhist Monk's mandra that says he can't smoke (tobacco or other substances)..There are not allowed to take alcohol or have relations with women or even impure thoughts..
