    A small batch of photos...

I've been out taking photos lately so here are a few of the best:

Self portrait (part of it got a bit overexposed, but it still turned out alright I think):

    An opening rhodie:

And I guess that's all I have from today. I also have a small problem. I ride pretty hard with my camera in my backpack (and yes, I do have a layer of padding all around it) and today it finally got the better of me. My lens only has plastic mounts and the first two broke off a few months ago, but it was still working fine. Today I must have broken the last one off, because now the lens hardly stays on at all (it just falls off). This is my Nikkor 28-80mm that came with the D50. So I'll probably just go for nicer lens with metal mounting. Along with a critique, you have any suggestions (for a similar lens, with metal mounts) just let me know.

    Good looking rhodie.
The background sky seems a little washed out in a couple of places, but other than that, this is nicely composed.

pic 1...nice composition...over exposed down the trail. Those blown out areas can be hard to deal with.

they look good to me. sometimes you have to have parts a little too bright in order to get the photo balanced. this is what it looks like in real life, dark shadows and harsh highlights.

Yeah, that's what it was, with hard sunlight coming through the trees at an angle, and being in the shade myself, it was hard to have myself well lit without getting some blown out parts.

    David,

I like both shots. I agree with the others on the lighting of the first. Having taken some shots in a forest recently, I also know that this can be really hard. I also think it would be better if the rider were a little further into the frame. The rider would be larger and thus a better subject. Have you taken any shots with a slightly slower exposure to catch the motion of the rider?

On the second, I like the way the leaves lead the eye to the flower. It is well focused and has good DOF. It seems a little more centered than some would like, but it works for me.

    Nice shots.

The first is a self-portrait done with a timer, so it's not easy to position myself perfectly (and I actually wanted to be where you described), but I take what I can get with those. As for the flower, I was shooting at an odd angle to make it come out straight in the end, so I wasnt thinking too much about centering, but I think it works alright. I'm quite amazed myself with how sharp it is in DOF.
