Taken on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach, VA the day before the Rock n Roll Half Marathon (I finished - yay me!), I'm not quite sure I like this shot. I'm also not sure I'm comfortable posting shots of unknown people (especially those under 18) without their knowledge or consent. Unfortunately, I took this from our balcony and had no chance to ask permission. If this was a great shot, I dunno if I could submit it for a photo contest legally or ethically. Any thoughts on the shot or on consent?

The second shot is another I'm not sure I like. I think it needs something, but I can't figure out what's missing.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Fred,

I like the first one. The boy is well placed in the frame, I like the movement and the fact that is shadow is there also add something.
I think that the boy could be slightly brightened up and that the picture could use some moderate sharpening but this is nothing PS can't take care of. My real concern is about the top of the frame, having only the base of what appears to be a lamp post distract me. I am not too sure if you should simply crop it or include more of it but something should be done there. Other than that, a nice shot.

The second picture doesn't work for me. Your idea of framing is interesting but the light is problematic. The foreground is way underexposed while the background is overexposed. I might be wrong but I don't think that it can be recovered. My only advice would be to reshot it when the light is softer (early morning or late afternoon).

BTW, congrats for the marathon, this is a nice achievement!

I agree with Seb on both shots. First one has good potential but might need a slight cropping adjustment and a definite levels/contrast adjustment. The second shot just has too large a contrast range to present the shadowed area. Either crop to the sunlit area or shoot at a different time of day when your exposure can show the scene with some shadow detail.

I was shooting at the marathon in Va Beach. Congratulations on finishing! My previous three posts on this forum have been from that day, as well as my next one that I am currently working on.

All I have to contribute about your shooting minors question is this:
I know that you can shoot anyone on public property.
You can shoot things on private property, as long as *you* are on the sidewalk ( which is Public Property)
I know you don't want to shoot at a daycare or around a school without letting someone in the administrative office know ( so they won't think you are kidnapping kids or doing something fishy) This also goes for public playgrounds.... Although you could ask a parent or guardian (they should be there) and you offer a print and your #... as you don't want to solicit their address to mail. ( I wouldn't be comfortable at all with any of these situations)

I think you only have to get a model release if you are selling the shots or they are being **published** ..... but I'm not sure on that, someone else may know better than I.

Also, If you are shooting a **Large Group** of people, model releases are unneccessary, as it would be impossible to get releases from say...... an angry mob that you shot outside of Michael Jacksons home. just for example.


Now, about your shots.... i got the agree with the above comments/posts. I think the shadow of the boy is awesome, wish the shadow was more prominent and think a tighter crop to lose the pole and the curb would make it alot better, also, I would clone out the place in the sidewalk where the grooves meet, so it doesn't distract.
But this needs to pop more. and while looking at it again, If it were my shot, I'd probably try to clone out the shadow of the lamppost under him... but I'm not sure. I'd play with it, that I'm SURE of!

Compositionally, the second shot needs more of the reflection of the rock. It needs to mirror the shape more. Right now the top dominates too much.

It would be wonderful if a canoer with a yellow lifejacket just happened to be paddling around that corner....

I will agree with whatb has been said about these shots. skte boarder is ok, can use a tighter crop and boost of levels a bit. the second is brought down by the harsh lighting on one side and the dark area being underexposed on the other side. Looks to be a nice scene though.

I have to agree with Gary about the cropping on the first pick.
When you have a situation where you are not able to get the exposure latitude needed for a scene try bracketing by a stop or two and combine the final shot from more correctly exposed parts from the bracketed shots. I think that second shot would be pretty good with more detail in the shadowed part as you can see from this quicky recovery of what detail there was in the posted shot.

VERY COOL. I love this discussion board. You took a shot that I didn't think was salvageable and at gave me a way to at least make it worthy of keeping on the computer.

You're welcome Fred. I didn't explain much, do you understand what to do? You should be able to do better on the original prior to reducing it for posting. Let us see how it comes out, it really is a special place - wish I could see it in person.

Hey there, I love the first shot but would like to see a much tighter crop, something similar to this.(but make it the way you like) Also pump up the shadow a bit and brighten up the boy. It's a good catch. I also like your second shot and it's much improved by what Chunk did. I like them both, but you really caught somthing good on that first one.
