Ultimately I think this one is a failure, but it is a learning experience. I am reading "When it Clicks" by Joe McNally, and he has this picture where he froze a business man in a limo with a flash outside the driver window and then let a long exposure blur the background.
I didn't realize you could do that but it makes sense. At the time I shot this last night I did not know what rear curtain on the flash even was. I wish I had shot some of these with rear curtain as I could have gotten what I wanted which was more dramatic blurring on the head but still with a sharp focus on the final face position.
While I don't consider this a great photo, I think it is a technique I may make use of in the future, and I partially post it here to inform other n00bs like me about the technique. Of course I would like to know if there are obvious issues you can spot that may have helped. I ended up taking this shot in our apartment in Denver, because I forgot to bring my tripod. So I decided to try to work with the blur rather than fighting it after I read about the technique.
Feel free to rip it to shreds....
