    Self-Centric

I am a newbie when it comes to PS. I have only had PS for about a year, and I have used it seriously for maybe 5 months. That being siad every once and awhile I try my hand at a purly digital peice of artwork. Needless to say I don't really come up with much worth even a mention much less a post, but I kinda like my last effort, so I thought I would share it. Please fell free to tell me everything that is wrong with it, and if there is anything right with it. I like it myself so you can't hurt my feelings.

Well, I have to be honest and tell you first off, this would be more considered digital art rather than photography ( and nothing wrong with digital art, just another meeium to visual creativity) But there is nothing here to me anyway, that is visually appealing. I could not give you any critique on this, it is what it is, but thought I would at least give you my feeling about it.

You want my honest personal opinion? I would like to grab a dart arrow and have a go at it, because I think it looks terrible.

Partly because it has too many obvious photoshop effects like plastic wrap, pinch and that default photoshop checkerboard kinda pattern and because it doesn't have any soul or beauty in it, but like I said, this is all my personal opinion.

Btw Almo, above all you as a moderator should know that this is not the right forum to post art and you're not giving the members the right example (talking as an ex-moderator myself).

What exactly is the right forum?

Almo, I like it. The only thing I don't like is how it seems fuzzy in the middle, right when you get to what should be the focal point. Right now the frame is dominant, which is OK, but when it leads your eye to the middle you should get the payoff, which would be a sharp clear center.

It really reminds me of a doily. You could make funky placemats out of this for your family. Maybe put each person's face in the middle.

    Thanks for your comments!

I think I might try the placemat thing. There is a place in the mall that does stuff like that with your digi images.

I viewed this earlier and had to think about it, I have come to the conclusion that after viewing the edges ( I really dont like the checkerboard either, it feels too "80's") and then getting to the swirly part ( which reminds me of a flower) I feel there should be something else in the middle... something more geometric maybe?? maybe an actual flower? Not sure... I just haven't quite got it yet, but I feel it would fit a different photo better, and is not so suited to a self portrait.

I do agree with Clicker here that the centerpiece should be something else. A flower sounds like a good bet. I would also see whether other colors would lead to something more attractive. Maybe you can start with warm tones on the border and dissolve them into blueish tones as you move closer to the center.

The checkered pattern does not bother me all that much... I do not mind the 80's art forms!

I think it's good to experiment. We all go through a process of dicsovering something and maybe applying our discovery in kind of a heavy-handed way and being thrilled witht he results 'cause it is new to us. Later, we look at it and think: "Wow, that was a little overdone." I'd put this image in this category. What you learned from doing it, though, might really lead to somethign sepcial down the road.

    Ow! My eyes!

Heh heh, the graphics swim before my eyes, making it pretty darn hard to look at. This isn't 80s to me though, it reminds me of the psychedelic 60s/70s stuff. It's interesting, but I don't think the centerpiece is strong enough. The photo of yourself, you're hiding behind your camera. The way the graphics funnel attention to the center, to you, I think a stronger image of yourself, maybe one that gives some good eye contact, is needed.

LOL at the placemats idea! That would be funny, one of each family member.
