How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

    Seb,

Interesting shot. I love the textures and the feeling here, though the whole shot just seems too dark for me.

I think this has a lot of potential, just a tad too dark for my liking,

Thanks Jared. On my calibrated screen the tones are right where I want them.

    Re: Sand

I can see where one may feel it is too dark, but that for me is part of the image. The contrasts of the shadowed and highlighted areas of the rolling sand path. I like the composition here mostly. It was well thought out. The placement of the dark clumps of grass in corners and lower middle frame create a traingular effect which helps pull, the eye around the entire scene and creates a pleasing balance. The inclusion of the vertical lines of the trees and hint of sky showing the defined patterns of the rolls of the sand works very well.If I had a critique at all, it might be to slightly bring back a bit of shadow detail in some of the areas that are almost black. I do see a great deal of shadow detail on my monitor, but a slight increase in some of the darker areas. Well thought out composition , Sebastian

Been to the Dunes haven't you?

Interesting choice of framing for this landscape. I'm thinking even wider might be more powerful. More sweep, yet this proportion does feel good. Great lines and use of the light to guide the eye with an implied leading line.

This photo is one I sense I want to see printed, just because of the subject and knowing what the right paper and the rest of the physical process brings.

The shrub in the center foreground somehow seems a tad darker than the rest. Probably my eyes, I've been editing lots lately. Looks good on my monitor by the way (of course profiled).

    Thanks DRG and Gary.

Glad you guys commented on the composition, particularly the placement of the three dark areas. It was intentional. This was done to help balance the arc of footprints from the lower left corner to the lower right corner.

What I like about the shot is the narrative and the mystery. I want to follow whoever it was over the dune.

    Nice work.

Don't get all high and mighty on us now Kidding, Kidding. I think I understand what Gary was saying in regards to darkness; the contrast definately is overwhelming (strong black, strong whites). That being said, I do like the pathway that you singled out that is bright.

    Well done.

    Re: Sand

    Jared,

Hehe, not trying to get all high and mighty, I understand what you meant. In my black and whites though I spend a lot of time tweaking the contrast to the point that I want it at, it's intentional.

    Chunk,

    Thank you.

One of the biggest things that drew me to this file (taken last May, by the way) was the shadows, and how the vertical ones make the image seem slightly surreal, as if there is a thin layer of something covering the whole frame. It makes me feel...uneasy.

I think you made a bold choice in your crop. There's a very intentional feel to what we're seeing. That said, I wish I had a more clear indication of a subject. The image is a little busy, and my eyes tend to drift.
I don't mind the darness one bit, and I really like the tones here.
    Overall a very interesting shot.
    Nice work!

I agree that this would likely be best in print. With my imagination though, I can kind of see it. It has a terrific dark feeling, and I almost want to follow the footsteps, but kinda afraid at the same time. Well done.

I like the darkness of the photo, it makes me think that the sand might be cool under the feet that just walked through it.

    Seb,

This is beautifully composed and draws me in to a well trodden path where people either converge or go their separate ways. The shadows give the impression of a cool evening with the barbecue just being lit and the beer flowing just out of shot.

Perhaps this is not what you intended but thats what it conveys to me. Possibly too many beer and BQ's on the beach :-)

The light/dark play here is immense! so is the points of focus or those things that draw you in. My eyes go all over the place and there's lots to see.

I personally think it's' a fine photograph but could see how some wouldn't like it just as easily.

The only thing that distracts me is that dark bush in the foreground. other than that, I think it's great.
