    San Francisco Zoo - Lion

For the first time ever, I ran out of memory before I was done shooting. Oops! I took 10 gigs with me, never thought that wouldn't be enough for one day. I guess I have to get used to double the file sizes! Anyway, here is the first I'll upload (it'll take a while to go through all 800!)

I was sooo anxious to be able to take a trip up to the zoo. Not only was it the first real day with the new camera, but one of my bosses (I work at a photography studio) lent me his 80-200mm f/2.8D lens. Talk about exciting!

    Nikon D90 + 80-200mm f2.8D
    Aperature: f/4.0
    Shutter Speed: 1/500
    ISO Rating: 200
    Focal Length: 200mm

African Lion - I've been waiting for years to be able to get a good shot of one of these guys! I'm very pleased with it, but would like to know what you all think as well. Thanks!

I think it's a very nice shot. Your choice to fill the frame was a good one IMO, and there seems to be a lot of detail and good sharpness here. How did you run out of mem? You must be shooting RAW to do that.

Now, areas that I think could have been even better are

    - Background. Somehow that little bit back there doesn't work for me. Sorry that I can't explain it better .. I'm dumbfounded.
    - The clipping off of the top of his head. I just think it would be stronger if it was all in there.
    - It is sharp but could be just a tad bit sharper on his eyes.
    - It's ever so slightly muted in density on this monitor.. I might bump up the brightness about 1/8 f stop.

    Again, very nice shot.

Hey, I really liked the lion shot! Lions always have so much character in their expression.

Thanks for the crit. Yes, I am shooting in RAW - always do at zoos In terms of the cropping and background, I see your point, but with the particular image, I can't really change it. I'll look out for that more shooting in the future. The brightness and saturation changed when i uploaded it. I work off of a calibrated monitor, but occasionally, and not always, when I upload images to the web, photos loose their PUNCH.

I still don't know why it happens, and have asked the folks at work, but no one seems to have a firm answer. I know it has something to do with the profiles, but not sure how to change that. For instance, on the dA artsite, the thumbnail will be dull, but the addon to Firefox that pulls the pictures original color profile works when you full view.

I've also experienced that. I mainly edit my photos in Corel Photopaint, but I also use Photoshop CS2. For whatever reason, the images look much more vibrant in PS than when I save a copy of them and view them in a browser With Corel, I don't get that shift.

So if you find the answer, please inform us !! I will look at the profiles issue.
