    San Diego Skyline

I see a thread for Vancouver skyline. Here is my contribution to the urban theme, taken today on a walking tour of downtown San Diego.

    Re: San Diego Skyline

i wasn't expecting such a tight shot when i first glanced the title of this! i think that will influence my critique whether i like it or not. it's burnt in to my head now. lol

the geometric shapes and patterns are nice here, but i wish.. u guessed it.. i wish it was a bit wider including more of the scene. even a bit of the ground or people if you were able to do so.

    Leels,

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate you leaving me a few thoughts. I didn't know what to call this shot. I know what you mean, however. The title would indicate a wider perspective but this was the first thing that came to mind. Glad you like it just the same.

Beautiful shot CF. Great isolation of subjects w/o the clutter. I have mixed feelings on how the sky is partially bright on the left side but of course that's the way it is.

There was a time when I would recognize exactly what buildings these could be, but with roughly doubling or tripling the # of high rises downtown in the last 5 or 6 years, no idea!

    GB,

Thanks so much for the comment. I know what you mean, things have changed so much in recent years it is difficult to recognize our home town. These buildings are on Market Street and roughly Columbia. With respect to the sky, tough lighting conditions as you know. I used the height of the building as best I could. The answer I suppose is, go at a different time. I wonder what this shot looks like either with moments of light left in the sky or at night. Hmmm, worth the trip I think.

    Thanks again.

Change the title and expectations will not interfere with a very nice composition.

Nice composition but a tough exposure.

The sky color looks off in the upper right hand corner...it looks purple on my monitor (My problem or yours?)

    Frog/Len:

Thanks so much for the comments. Frog: I will give this some thought. It was a hurried post of a thread. Len: upper right corner color is a deep sky blue. I don't have purple. I have a pure white at upper left through powder blue to deep blue at upper right.

    I suspect it's a color space issue.

What color space is the original saved in?

    Len,

Good question. What color space was it saved in...., this is a Photoshop issue I suspect. I know absolutely nothing about Photoshop so I don't know what color space is. Aside from a crop here and there, or a bump in contrast both administered through Irfan View, my pictures are "what you see is what I took." Sorry I can't be more technically specific.

I guess I should look into what color space is, however.

    Here is quick primer

    http://www.bythom.com/qadcolor.htm

Basicially, different media can handle different color Gamuts better. The web is designed around sRGB, which is apretty narrow gamut (to allow transferability)........printers and direct monitors can handle wider gamuts. Record and process a picture in AdobeRGB (which has a wide gamut) posted on the web will (possibly) not look the same to us as what you see on your screen looking at the original. You always want to process in the color space that you are publishing in. I use a different color space for printing than I do for Web publishing than I do for my monitor at home.

It's worth the time to understand as it will impact your output.

    Hope it helps.
