    Saint Mary's 2nd version

If you just look at all of the elements involved this one was tough to line up in the middle of the night.

Very nice, I think this is one occasion where the keystone effect adds to the image.

Thanks, This one is tough because of it's location. On a very steep hill. The only way to get any higher would be with a very tall ladder on some narrow steps.

This couldn't have been easy and I like the light and focus a lot.
One nitpick is that the corners of the church and the corners of the railing lead off frame.
A hair wider would be better me thinks.
    Its a small nitpick.

    Greg,

Getting out for some night action: whooo-hooo! Nice job. You have nice detail in the stone work, the railings, around the windows... the lights above the doors might be a bit harsh and if you figure out how to tone that down without losing detail in the steps or the very top where the roof meets the dark of night, let me know. I haven't figured that out yet. What are the technical particulars, i.e., f-stop and time. Nice job though, I really like night work as you know and this is great.

Thanks Frog, This isn't far from the house. I may reshoot with this in mind.

Thanks CF, I agree with the lights and I haven't got that down yet. But here are the settings 14mm, F5.6, 4sec. 100iso. I shot in Raw.

What I have learned is a higher f-stop and longer exposier. I got results I was happier with in the shot I posted Sunday (Practice, Practice, Practice).

I love to night shoot, it's a whole new thing. I shot a low f/stop here because I did not want the star effect here. I thought it wouldn't look right. But I agree with the practice. You have put up some good ones..

    Greg,

You are correct, a star effect here would not be good. I don't know right off what result you would get from a higher f-stop/longer exposier when the light is that close and large in the image. I don't know if we would get a star shape or would it make for a sharper image but not as hot. Hmmm, something else to practice. Now you have me thinking...I simply do not know the answer.

This is a easy reshoot, It is only a couple of miles from the house. I'll give it another go and get back to you.

One of the things I have tried with some success is to take two pictures and photoshop them together. Meaning, take one picture set to get the lighting sources perfect, and then without moving the camera, take another picture to get what is being lit perfect, and then photoshop them together. I'll use this example...

    Name: CandleIcon.jpg
Views: 78
Size: 38.6 KB

The first thing I did, is set the Camera to get a good saturated shot of the Candle Holder. Of course, when I did this, the flame was overly bright and had the star effect.

The next thing I did, was to set the Camera up to shoot the flame, without worrying about what the candle holder looked like.

Then I took the shot set up for the candle holder, and "stiched" in the shot flame from the shot set up for the flame. This is the result. The Candle Holder is nice and bright with a good flame, without the star effect or light washout. Of course, the more light sources you have, the tougher this becames.

I may try that next time I am out. I have done this at times trying a sky replacement. I never thought of it here. Thanks for sharing this.
