    sailboat

Back from vacation at Presque Isle on Lake Erie. Here's the first of a series of sunset shots I took. This one is a sunset shot of a sailboat, a little cliche, but the sunset was just so gorgeous that evening. not much has been done to it except a little curves adjustment. let me know what you think!

wow, great sunset. I think you exposed it correctly for the most important part. The boat itself is irrelevant. But it might have been a bit better to place the boat at an inflection point of one of the thirds -- prob the left one.

Just seems like it's heading off into the sunset...

I really like the colors you captured in the sky. Like GB, I'm not thrilled by the placement of the boat. I would have liked to see it in the bottom right hand 1/3rd of the photo so it had room to sail into the image.

    Hi Echoback,

I think this image could be a lot stronger by dodging the area from the tree line down to the water and include the sail above the tree line too. In PS you could use the quick mask and the curve tool to lighten this area.

    Re: sailboat

thank you for all the comments! I tried to play around with the dodge/burn tool like you suggested jbaldocchi, but I can't get it to look right. Is there a way that you can select the whole area and then dodge it all at once?

I also agree that it would look better if the boat was in the bottom 1/3 of the picture. I guess I could try cropping it, but I think that might detract. I guess I was trying really to make the sunset the focus, but the boat got in the way lol. Of course, I didn't want a plain old sunset, so hopefully the boat adds a little something. I think it might help to lighten it up just a bit.

In PS go to channels and pick the best image in red, green or blue. My guess would be red and use the magic wand tool set to about 15 to pick the area you want to manlipulate. It isn't perfect but then use the lasso tool to eliminate the highlights that remain. I think it's a combo of the shift key and the lasso tool. Circle the area you want to remove. Once picked switch back to Layers mode and you should have a pretty good selection.

I guess the first question is do you have Photo Shop?

well, I'm using The Gimp right now, but it is pretty similar to PS, and I usually can figure it out. I'm still getting used to post-work though but thanks for your help, I will give that a try.
