    Ruby Beach In B&W 1-26-09

Was hoping for a great sunset the weather forecast was forecasting only partly cloudy sky's. I should know by now never believe the forcast here in WA. Anyway a low tide at Ruby gave me an opportunity to shoot it at a little different respective.

    Any CC, Feedback greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for looking

Love the angle and the tonal play. The reflections in the foreground are great, but I'm up in the air about the glowing halos around the rocks and trees on the right (odd because I don't see them elsewhere). I don't think the dull sky hurts this one a bit. Nice work!

This is my fav from the ones you posted in viewfinder.
Didn't notice the halos then but I wasnt looking to critique either.
How does one stop from getting halos? I know over sharpening will do it but this doesn't appear oversharpened.

Beautiful, Ray. Love the tonal effect, composition, subject, everything. I'd hang that on my wall in a heartbeat!

Thanks guys for the comments. Here is a rework hopefully the dreaded halos are not quite as noticeable. Couple of new pluggins in CS3 I'm using and things can get out of control real easy as far as halos. Usually for me the way I sharpen for the web doesn't cause the halo affect.

Again thanks for looking and the feedback is greatly appreciated

The tones and contrast you have in the first shot outweigh the effect the halo's have on the shot.

Love it! Print large and hang!

My thoughts, too. The first one is best.

I note you talk about CS3, etc. I'm not looking to know detail (I don't understand it anyway), but did you do much PP to get this shot?

I'm just trying to determine the likelihood of getting great shots straight from the camera. I'm doing good to learn the camera and the basics of photography and am not too interested in Photoshop or whatever.

I like it quite a bit, good use of B&W but my first thought is that I want more of the pool at the bottom of the image. I'm thinking the reflection of the rock comes just a little too close to the edge of the frame.

Still, I'd call it a keeper and print it for sale.
    No, I DON'T need that.

Great, Ray. I do see the value of more water in the foreground, but I also like it just fine as as. Agree wholeheartedly with those say print and hang/sell.

I love the contrast and sharpness. Also the reflections of the rocks in the calm pool are a plus. Good job!

Only word out of my mouth upon first seeing this image was "WOW". How can something be striking and calming at the same time? Stunning.

Rorschach... anyone else think that front angled rock ledge looks like an alligator?

Nice shot, Ray. Weird to see you doing b+w but you pulled it off nicely.

A big crocodile sitting there waiting for you to let your guard down. I really like your shot, but I am not at ease with the bit rock back there in the middle, as it seems to destroy the tranquility of the foreground. it almost seems like two pictures in one. Hmp.

Wow that is a great B/W seascape. It looks like a scene out of the Goonies in black and white. Just waiting for the pirate ship to go sailing by. What were your settings if you don't mind me asking?

Ray, this is quite good. the composition, exposure and subject, lighting etc is all working in great harmony here. The re-work is far better.
When I first viewed the first image in the thread I was about to move on because it did nothing for me. The HDR looking effect really spoiled it , seems to have lost all sense of depth and mood. Upon scrolling down some more I saw you re edited it and that one is absolutely perfect. Fine work.
you just posted the third edit as I posted this it seems. I'm much leaning to your second edit, that was is right on. The subtle tones bring forth the mood alot better and renders a deeper impact, for me anyway.
