    Round and Round ...

From a San Diego xmas festival I attended this evening. I may go back for its 2nd night tomorrow - suggestions for shots? (See the Viewfinder for more images.)

A tripod's not practical here by the way. I do need to do something to stabilize my camera, though.

The light cone formed in the 4th shot is really cool, it would be great if the lights on the pillar were not blown out and sharp like the others.

    Re: Round and Round ...

I agree with the 4th being the most interesting.... There are many lights, and this will be the primary source of images for you, but here are a couple of pointers:

1- At the cost of grain, go for high ISO, and this will give you the possibility of shooting people near lights anyway...

2- There are some D-I-Y type tripod, kind of guerilla and the sort... This is the link!

The most interesting part, for me at least, about shooting at a festival, is the activities and the people...

One more thing about the photos, I might suggest you set your exposure less by half a stop for the 4th...

    Re: Round and Round ...

Your basic premiiss is extremely attractive and interesting, however as you pointed out you need to stabilize the camera.

When shooting sporting events, American football, rest of the world football, etc., I like to use a monopod, with my long lens wide open and sometimes relatively slow speeds. I also plan to put a tripod head on the monopod on occassion, when a tripod is not practical, during waks and small boat trips into the remote areas of Brazil.

    Re: Round and Round ...

thks everyone. I did go back last night with a small gorilla like mini tripod, but didn't use it, as I was with friends and the crowds were so heavy. With photography, I think it's hard to goof off and get good pix - you really have to focus on your work (like most anything). Thx for the image comments too. I have more in the Viewfinder.

    Re: Round and Round ...

I was thinking of using a gorilla for an assistant (that's what I'm down to these days), but never as a tripod.

Really interesting shots, IMO. Well done.

    Re: Round and Round ...

I really like these as a series. I'm not as crazy about the fourth as everyone else, but the idea is fantastic.
