    Tree Stump

I found this old blowdown stump facinating. Not sure why. Any comments?

The first thing I noticed was howe slanted the horizon is. Now thats not neccessarily a bad thing, and I don't think I have a problem with that in this image. What I lie here is that you placed the stump so that the top of it breaks above the horizon, as opposed to being below it and just blending in with the ground. I feel that is very important in these kind of shots to bring the subject out almost three dimensionally. dof is fine. Abit of unsharp mask could help sharpen the details on the stump. B&W works nice for this but I personally like very deep contrasty b&w images and find this a little flat. I would just bring out the whites and blacks a bit more. Also, I would try darkening the background with a darkening brush, everything behind the stump, would further help it to pop out. A good subject and not a bad shot.

I don't know why, I love it too. The B&W is excellent. My only criticism is that the left hand side of the stump blurs ever so slightly with the rest of the background. I'm not quite sure what u can do to fix it... Perhaps even colour?! But other than that, I really like it.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks for the comments. The slanted horizon is due to the fact that this is actually on the side of a hill, and the tree blew down uphill. I took a shot with the camera tilted to level the horizon, and it was very flat. I may play with the contrast and brightness a bit later.
