    Rooftop Sunset

I took this pic looking across neighboring rooftops at sunset. I really liked how the smoke stacks looked in the background but, wasn't sure how much of an interference that pine tree was. What do you all think?

    Re: Rooftop Sunset

Well, I see what you were getting at here. The sunset is very subdued, and the objects in front of it have potential for adding interesting shapes instead of it being just another shot of a sunset.

But what I have a problem with here is the general obstruction of the sunset. There's no break in the trees and stack, and for the most part, the objects are not really all that interesting. It's also a tad bit soft (use tripod?).

I think with better objects for the silhouettes that it could work, but I doubt you had time to hunt for them. I guess the thing to do here is plan ahead.

    Re: Rooftop Sunset

Thanks for the input GB1. It was kind of a last minute shot. I liked how the light played off of the smoke stacks in the distance so I grabbed the cam and tripod for a quick shot. Only problem is the pesky pine blocking the shot I was hoping for. I envisioned the trees on the left and right/center-right framing the smoke stacks. I tried several attempts at cloning out the pine tree but just couldn't get what I wanted. The soft, post sunset look though is what I wanted. You think I would have been better off a few minutes earlier with more sun for a sharper shot? Thanks again.

Yeah its a bummer about that pine or this could be a nice shot.
If you didn't mention the smokestacks, one would have to look closely to notice them.
If there is another chance with a nice sunset is there a chance you could get on the other side of that tree?

I wish Frog. Only way to do it would be to go "Mission Impossible" (cue theme music) and hop onto someone else's rooftop or porch

    Re: Rooftop Sunset

I agree with GB here in that there is a cluttering of foreground silhouettes. The smoke stacks do make for interesting vertical elements to silhouette in a sunset, but are being obstructed by the trees. If you could find a small clearing giving you the ability to zoom in tighter on the stacks, you could work around them.
