    On the Roof

Not sure about this composition. I also tried a version where the right 1/4 is cropped off and it seems to work well, but am posting the whole thing for critique.

Taken at Borrego Springs, Ca. Not sure where the third cross is (?)

Nikon D200, with various post processing.

Well, if you feel like cropping the right, crop the left, too, until the building is close to the frame

My immediate reaction was: that's kind of cool. I like the super saturated sky. I wish the church was lit a little better. Overall though I still say "that's kind of cool". Nice shot.

    Re: On the Roof

I like the subtle color changes in the church and crosses. If you do crop from the right, I'd hope you'd leave that right vertical in. I don't think I'd crop it at all.
    Dramatic shot....I like it.

    Re: On the Roof

AE - do you really think it should be tight on the left side?

GeeNine - thanks for commenting. There isn't much detail on the church walls.. I guess too much contrast. But it does create a simplistic image like this. Guess there's pros and cons here.

Frog - well I was planning on eliminating that right vertical. See the crop here n' tell me what you think...........

    Re: On the Roof

After I read your signature, I took the liberty of re-editing your pic last night in PS. I spent almost an hour on it, and what I found worked for me was not cropping the left side, but rather the bottom. I cropped it at the bottom to about the height of the top of the window on the left so all you could see was solid building. I was also able to accentuate the clouds a little bit, but in the end, I don't know that it added much to the image. I seem to be appreciating how sharp everyone's images are as of late. I can't seem to get mine that sharp, but I'm trying to shoot everything in manual.

I think this is a great photo. I noticed that sky right away. Very blue.

I like the composition but the blown out part of the sky bothers me.

    Re: On the Roof

Hey frleal70 - Post it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's see what it looks like. There's probably many different ways to edit this one. Btw I usually sharpen mine up a bit before posting, esp if resizing (which is all the time).

Lisa - thanks for commenting. The polarizer filter did it's work that day.

AE - Try a crop too if you think it might work

Greg - It is pretty white in that one area at the bottom of the right side cross, but I didn't think it was a problem. Unfortunately this seems to be a problem with digital files - a lot of blow outs. No clue why it does this compared to printing off of film.

I actually deleted it. But when I get home I'll redo it and post it. It shouldn't take as long since I remember what all I did to it. I do like the way the clouds turned out, but there were some parts that ended up being a little more blown out than the original.

    Re: On the Roof

AE - All three definitely seem to have their own feeling. Amazing how a little cropping can change a picture.

Not sure what I think about the re-edit. I kinda like it, but I might be a little biased.

    Re: On the Roof

frleal70 - In some ways it's better. You seem to have gotten those bright areas a little more defined. There's a certain edge to it now that wasn't there before, perhaps due to increases sharpness and/or grain. You can however see something like a halo seeping in around the top of the building, possibly spillage from whatever filter/effect you used to edit that big, bright area.

    Interesting edit anyway.

    Re: On the Roof

Interesting to see all the ways folks are playing with this but I like the original.

The mix of straight lines and curves in the building plus the simple tones of the structure compared to the fluffy clouds and blue sky is a winner. Good lighting too.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Hi,
I also like the lines and the range of neutral colours of the clouds. The steaming dome on the left is a plus.

Thanks guys! I think I will pull the trigger and print this one out as large as I can get away with, see how it looks framed.
