I like the lighting in this photo! It looks nicely bright to me, and not grainy.

It seems that it would be such a better shot if you were at a different angle...I would like to see that mic stand moved, not in front of most of his face...it almost becomes the subject since it is in the way... if not, then it is still a major distraction.

He has some cool green hair! We have had blue, pink and red in our house...so, i definitely feel for you and your kid's "self expression" !!!

Don't be afraid to crank up the ISO on the camera and use the stage lights, if there are any, as much as possible. It may produce a grainy effect but it will be much closer to the way it really looked to be there. It helps lend to the overall mood of the scene, plus a flash in a dark room is a distraction to everybody.

Your son looks like he's having fun which is the most important part. I agree with stephljones that another angle would get the mic. off of his face. It's a good rule of thumb to keep distrctions clear of the face if it's at all possible just keep moving around until you find something that works.

Keep shooting and good luck for your son's band!!!

These can also look great in B&W, gives it that old feel, you can add a bit of noise and it can look quite effective. Cheers, S
