    Roadside Attractions: TipiTop

Found this image while at THE northern route roadside attraction, Wall Drug. If you've come within 300 miles of South Dakota you might have heard of it. I have two versions of this image but I will start out with this one.

Comments and Critiques are welcomed and cheerfully explored, but leave the editing to me.

Well, you have a very interesting foreground frame but it really leads nowhere and the image at the back is simply interference and a distraction. The reverse of the foreground shapes is interesting but the centre is really just confusing line shapes. It doesn't work at all, and is not effective.

Thank you for your input. I wasn't shooting this with the intention of framing anything so I think you are correct that it leads nowhere. This was captured as a texture shot, i.e. as a background for something else; so for this image interesting shapes and intersecting lines is what it's all about, thanks for noticing!

For a texture shot, there is very little or no texture or detail in the objects in the photo. As a background for something else, there is no room for something else in the photo, except perhaps the sun that should already be there.

Well now there is no room to quibble is there? You are absolutely unanimous with yourself. You don't like it and you don't have any constructive criticism other than I should have framed the sun (!?!)( :idea in the center of the hole. Okay. . . well, thanks again for your input, it is duly noted.

Sure, the bird is in the wrong location! The lines and shapes lead into the centre bottom area and there is nothing there but distracting shapes. Keep at it and you may actually get somewhere.

I think the second one works. The lines don't lead to the bird but when the eye follows them it is immediatly drawn to the bird and probably back and forth, too.

It's a neat design CL, but also somewhat stark. I'm not sure what I would have done to make it better though. The sky poking through is OK but I guess I don't like the wooden beams in the background up there, for they seems to clutter things up. Oh well, I do like the bottom half of the shot.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Frog. I thought the addition of the bird might create some tension to the scene as you described. I'm glad you can see it too.

Thanks for commenting GB. I always appreciate your input. While I can see your point about the tent poles and I suppose I could clone them out, structurally they have to be there to hold up the tent and so I would rather work with them than have them removed. I have an alternate version of this. Please let me know what you think on it as well.

    Re: Roadside Attractions: TipiTop

I think the second image with the bird is very good. The original without the bird was ok,but there did not seem to be enough to hold interest. The bird gives much, and I feel it is placed well. The lines of the poles do not lead me to the bird, but the dark, easily recognizable silhouette of the bird draws my eye away from the structure and demands my attention. This gives the image much more depth in that it has me looking all over and gives me more of a feeling of being inside the top by viewing up and out of it.

Cindy - Try rotating the last one you posted here 90 degrees CCW. I think this might balance it better. It seems even more busy to me, but now that it's more obviously so it might be 'ok' if that makes any sense

CL I like the first alternative version before you rotated it the best. It immediately caught my eye. I like the way the blue of the sky pops out between the beams. Very cool

Hmm... Just out of curiousity I played with the backgrounds to see what different shades would do. I think they bring out the beams design.. What do u think? Looks like I missed a few spots on the dark blue one

I like the bird exactly where it is, just because it's not in the center and causes your eye to look at the bird then the center, back and forth.

The viewer is not focused on one area, and is moving their eye back and forth. I prefer you to cause the viewer to move their eyes around the photo.

    CL

This to me is a B&W photo - colour destroys the feeling in the photo. I downloaded the photos and played and the B&W are much better photos.

My only complaint are the modern devices in the structure, Tiedown, nuts & bolts.

I prefer the one with the bird in colour but the last one in B&W really can bring out texture in the wood.

Thank you for your comment Roger. I have thought about doing everything for this series in black and white. I do seem to like them better once I've converted them. Here they are again with the BW conversion.
