Great scene Rod, very well composed. Only nitpick is it seems to have a slight blue shift though???

Re: a river runs over it

The exposure is really interesting, except for the actual wheel which is too dark IMO. I also wish there was more space above the wheel though I think your choice of showing that or the water was correct, just want more. The slight darkness of the photo really creates a saturated, mysterious feeling.

Re: a river runs over it

Thx Aaron..color is straight from camera..there was some selective burning..?..
Greg..the problem with these pics was the time of day and of course the wheel moving. There was a real problem above of blow out...slow the shot down and you also get the wheel blurry. Any brighter though and I think the moss will start looking nuclear..ya think. I tried to bring it out in the other post and..somethings are just too dark naturally. So, a quicky with 3 boys and a wife in tow is about the extent of this shot. Thx for your thoughts.

Re: a river runs over it

Hmmm, maybe it's just me then. I only notice it in the leaves to the left of the water wheel, against the edge of the frame. The rest of the scene looks fine. Might be time for calibration on my end though...LOL

    Thx Janie!
Aaron, I very rarely mess with color individually..usually selective leveling..some hue/saturation..but not on this one. I did drag a pretty big burn tool around the edge.

Rod, While this one is nice, I still like the original from the other other thread.

I think I like this one better. The only thing I see would maybe be to clone a couple of out of focus pebbles in the lower right. But I like the great lighting and colors. Nice work.

Re: a river runs over it

Thx John..picture a pleasant afternoon with a nice leisurely pace taking all the pics your hearts content...don't picture my 9,7 and 5 year old boys behind me.
Javi, I originally liked the 1st better but the direct angle of the wheel and the overall darkness were hard to overcome. Theyre still my babies.
Thx Greg, I'll keep that in mind for final edits.
Thanks Frog for taking the time to comment, glad you like it.

Rod -- I wonder what it would look like if you had purposely slowed down your SS as slow as possible?

Re: a river runs over it

Rod, I like this composition alot. Stronger than the previous one I feel. Everything is working well here for me. The only thing that I can think of here is that I notice the focal point was on the foliage in the fg. thats ok, but I'm wondering if focusing on the wheel would work better. Just something to think about if you go back. I'm not saying it would be better, but I would like to see the comparison. Either way, I think this is frame worthy and ready to hang
    Good stuff.

Re: a river runs over it

Thx Greg and Gary..I actually did try to slow the wheel down as my approach initially said make the water fizzle..this is 1/50 s...so Gary, I use center focusing and I think the softness you are seeing is the wheel moving..If you look at the axle and the piece of wood to the right of wheel, they are pretty sharp. In retrospect I wish I would have used a smaller aperture/faster shutter and been able to stop the wheel for more defintion while also helping with the blown out background...make sence? Thx for your support.

The June issue of Pop Photo had an article about using very slow SSs in the middle of the day using multiple ND and polarizer filters. Some of the effects were pretty stunning. Doesn't look like that article is up on their website (yet) but if you can get ahold of it, it might be worth a look!

Re: a river runs over it

Greg, funny you ask..have the mag but not the filters. My wife actually ordered a nice Hoya polarizer for the 18-200 for Fathers day but didnt realize it was coming from Hong kong...alas we left for our trip and it arrived..too late. Do you really think a blurry wheel would look better?

Rod, I really don't know what to expect. It will surely be different, but I am not sure it will be better. Experiments are good.

Some of those effects in that article sure were neat
