    River long exposure

I took this with an aperture of f/22 at a 13 second shutter speed. i have done a small bit of burning on the sky in photoshop because the sky was very overexposed but if i had shortened the shutter speed any more, the river itself wouldnt have been exposed properly (i tried many different shutter speeds for it). the iso was set at 100.

    Re: River long exposure

    Welcome to the forums!

The river and sky look good but the trees and banks are very dark.
I'm not even sure that's bad for this shot as it does add to the mood.
I do think it could be lightened some though to get a little more detail on the edges of river and in trees.
    Keep Shooting!

    Hello,
I really like how the water came out but overall the picture is just too dark. Looks like a nice place to go back to. The idea is/was great!

I think a little earlier, or later depending on the time with a little more light in the trees would work better. It also looks a little tilted. I bet this would be splendid taken in the fall.

Luckily I took more at different exposures. The only problem that i can see in this exposure is that the colors are less saturated than in the other. It's odd because when i open the jpeg in Preview it looks great but if i open the raw file in Photoshop, I lose saturation.

Yea I agree with that! The fall colors would work very well for it I think. The only reason i went when it was darker is because in the past few days, there have been no clouds in the sky at all so the sky always comes out with a nice orange and then a huge blownout white that ruins the photo. I'm thinking about buying a Lee Grad ND filter but I'm not sure which one to buy. I'm leaning towards either a soft 0.6 or a hard 0.9 as those are the only ones that B&H have in stock that would be worthwhile. If they had a 0.6 hard i would buy it in an instant.

I use a .6 for most of my shots. The .9 is just to much and you can see a line and it is obvious a grad was used. You can buy the filters in a kit and get all three as cheap as just buying two.

ahhh, I never get sick of the milky long exposure water flow pics. Yes, and little too dark, as some have said. This would be a tricky one....perhaps a different time of day, or night ... or get creative with HDR

I saw the sets but they're back-ordered of course. Just about every Lee filter that would be the most popular is back-ordered currently by Lee. It sucks but I'll probably just go with the 0.6 soft.

Thanks! I'll be taking some similar ones soon. I just remembered about another great spot on this river so I'll post what I think is the best one when i take them. I can't wait until there are some leaves on the trees. Green trees in this scene would be great I think.
