I would say the second one is the best exposure as far as the sunrise. It does capture the colors and calm of that time of day. However, since you have a lot of rock / cliff in the foreground both shots come off as being a tad on the dark side (underexposed).

I think what you have to do in situations like that is decide if the shot is going to be about the water and the sun, or the shape of the cliff, in which case you might want to shoot a different angle (with the sun not being directly in the middle of the frame) and a longer exposure to pick up more warm hues off the rocky surfaces.

I love the cliffs, they are terrific. I can even see the texture of them. I love your countryside, I receive a newspaper from Scotland in email just so I can see any pictures there might be of Scotland. I don't mind the weeds so much myself, for some reason, I think they add a little character to the picture. I can also even see the sunrise reflecting off of parts of the cliffs.

    Beautiful shots.

thanks all for commenting. thought i might add that these "cliffs" are a bit of driftwood lying on the grassy verge just before the beach ( portobello in edinburgh ) i set the tripod up low level so as to be just above it. Ill keep in mind the weeds comment, but i thought they somewhat framed the image.

Driftwood? You are kidding right? LOL I thought they were cliffs or rock!

I like the darkness in the first shot, but the second I think it is a bit too much, but I love the reflection on the rocks in the second shot, nice work.
