    Regatta Pics

Shot a rowing regatta here in CT this past weekend. Pulled a few selects for your inspection. Fragile ego in place so be gentle.

    Thanks!

Nothing to be gentle about, IMHO these are great!
Especially like the second one and the last one, but they are all very good.

    Welcome to the forum...

    Re: Regatta Pics

Are you using the centre AF point ?
A lot of the images look centred, where there may be a better composition off-centre.

#1 is nice, ladies' coxed ?
#2 could have been great, with the left edge of the frame just right of the back of the first out of focus rower, and so the right of frame captured the whole of the smiler. The contrast of their expressions is fantastic, I want to see more.
    #3 Excellent timing
#4 Great face ! can you lighten the shadows a little?
#5 I wish you'd shot just a little to the right to get his hands in.
#6 I wish you had all of the boat in the foreground in.
#7 Just shave a little off the right to get rid of that boat. Centred is good on this one.

I think you just need to look around the edges of the frame, to see what you're cutting off or what you need to cut off - as well as capturing the main subject.

Post some on the sports forum too please, I can't remember the last time we had regatta photos there.

    Thanks, Paul, for the feedback!

#1 coxed? Do you mean coaxed?
#2 i know what you mean, yes.
    #3 Thank you!
    #4 Sure can.
#5 Yeah, but it was a prime 300mm 2.8 with me on a small boat. Not a whole lot of wiggle room.
#6 I kinda like it trailing off the page.
#7 Yeah, I should crop that thing out.

    Nope I mean coxed.
The cox is responsible for managing the tactics and steering.
Unlike the traditional layout where they sit upright with the rowers and at the rear of the boat, I've seen some front-coxed boats with the cox almost laying down in the boat on front of the rowers.
I can't see any other reason for the blonde to be pointing the wrong way, and laying down on the job

    Re: Regatta Pics

    Wow these are great!

I really like #1, #3, and the last one.

#1 - I think having some water at the bottom of the frame would strengthen it. Love being able to see just the face of the person on the left

#3 - I wish the camera was angled more to the left to capture more of the droplets. Wonderful light angle on that one.

Last one - my favorite of the bunch. Great mood and nice composition. Couldn't have asked all three of them to position themselves any better than they already were. Crop in slightly to eliminate the edge of the coach's boat on the right. The fact that the main boat is aligned nearly dead-on to you makes it perfect for this shot. Frame this one. Nice job.

Actually it's Coxswain. It's the person in charge of the boat in navigation and steering.
    Overall very nice shots.
