Red Barn

While shooting this barn for the April Project Forum, I thought I saw something. So I went back 23 1/2 hours later and got this one.

What do you think? Did I get IT? In case you want to see the whole barn, it is there in Almo's April/RED thread.

A very graphic image. I like it.
Personally I would have cropped off the roof. The sky is just not doing anything for me and actually distracts from the shadow.
Good eye on spotting this tho.

I agree with PT, crop off the roof and the slice of concrete on the bottom and the shot is a great abstract/artistic shot. Wonderful colors and great eye.

The shadows and lighting make this image for me. They realy add some drama to what could have been a very static image. I don't mind the roof line, but I do see what the others are talking about. It works well for me either way.

Michael, Jared, and PT: thanks for the input. I have to admit that I was skeptical, at first, about removing the roof line as I wanted as much tree shadow as possible. Now seeing the iterations without the roof line, I must say that your suggestions are valid. Even with less tree shadow, it is indeed a stronger image now.

This has been a good exercise for me regarding fine-tuning the composition. Below are three iterations of a tighter crop. Each has a different feel to it. The three aspect ratios are square, 2:3, and 4:5.

The first one out of the last three is FANTASTIC!! Very Good Job. It is so strong, I liked it before but the power of the building really just pops in the first of the last three. Great Job!!

Great eye and persistence to go back and get this shot based on a feeling that "something was there"! I'm guessing you got it! I, too, like the first of cropped images, though I don't mind the roof in the original.

Personally, i like the image, but i think cropping the image might not do it. Depending on the background, i would have tried to show the red barn in its natural place. Hey, it's not my picture, i didn't know the scenario. I read a book that said try and go to that exact spot and photograph the object in different lighting and in different situations, if you ever go back to the barn, try the shot at dusk to get an intense color fell, and at dawn to give a more mellow touch. Like the picture, good work, also, go with crop 2, more lines to make the picture look like you are an expert at photoghraphy.

Perhaps the better question is what do you consider the subject and the background? For me, I prefer the vertical crop as I consider the shadow as the subject. I enjoyed reading your take on it and the reasons why you like what you like.

Isn't it great that everyone sees things differently.
