    Radio Tower and Cloud

Kodak HIE, Cokin red filter. Forgot the settings, because I didn't write them down . Comments and critique welcome.

    Re: Radio Tower and Cloud

First off, that is a cellphone tower not a radio tower.

The composition is great. I would almost say that there is to much sky, but there is a really neat whisp of a cloud that just kinda carries you up like a stairway. The main subjects are interesting, and the whole scene tells a pretty nice store. The only real niggle I have the over exposure. This bottom half of this image is almost to brite to look at. Maybe adding a stop or so would have helpped. What camera were you using? What mode was it set to? This has the look of an auto shot to me.

At any rate, a pretty cool photo.

This is an interesting comp and scene. i like the negative space in the sky. The bright foreground, most likely due to the red filter has a special effect filter look to it. I only wish that the tower were a bit stronger or taller and a little more prominent. But this is a strange alluring scene.

    Hi Drew,
The photo gives a very dreamy feeling. The unsual position of the clouds also make it surreal.

Hi Drew - like Gary I think this probably would have been improved if the mast had formed a stronger focal point, perhaps with more of the path to lead the eye in towards it.

Alternatively you could have tried getting rid of the mast altogether, and and instead just concentrated on the tonal and textural relationship between the three bands of grass, cloud, and clear sky. Having said that though, I do really love what Yoyo calls the 'dreamy' feeling this shot evokes - it feels like a half remembered image that gradually fades as you hit your alarm clock. Nice work

Great sky to capture for IR.
I have to agree that the photo could of been stronger with the tower being more part of the scene and drawing us in more.
But I also love that sky and that really is a focal point all by itself.
Mattp made a very good suggestion with removing the tower all together and going for a tonal and texture shot,,,which I think would of made a very strong photo.
Anyway, you did a great job and I enjoy the IR that your doing.
    Cheers.

    Re: Radio Tower and Cloud

almo, thanks for the correction. I used a Canon TLb. So you can probably guess that I was flying by the seat of my pants on this one (aka, manual) . I probably overexposed a tad because it was overcast slightly. Glad you enjoy it.

Gary, thanks for the suggestion. If I remember rightly, the cell tower was smack dab in the back parking lot of an office building, so making it more prominent might have been troublesome. But not impossible though. And after all, I was really going for the cloud anyways. I shall try to keep that in mind next time.

Yoyo, glad you like the dreamy feel. That is one of the reasons I like infrared film. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Matt, when I was taking the picture, I was probably trying to get both the cloud and tower. I am not sure why. The cloud is interesting by itself anyways. Thanks for the suggestions, and glad you like the dreamy feel. Not many people like the infrared "look", it being so abnormal.

PlantedTao, thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I shall get a chance to reshoot this one over, but maybe not. I think next time I shall concentrate on the clouds and sky, them being more interesting any ways . Glad you like the IR stuff. This was my first roll, and I am hooked.

Thanks everyone for looking and commenting.
