    Re: Putting on Shoes

You know Emily, I can see where you were going, but I don't think this photograph quite gives the sense of her putting on her shoes.
First off, it's a little dark, which kind of gives a scarry kind of feeling.
Secondly, and most importatnly, I can't see her face, which is probably expressing a lot of concentration, which I think is important to show in this photograph.
    Make sense?

Makes total sense, Brian...thanks for your thoughts on this. It's actually quite a bit darker HERE than on the program I have, which confused me...

Your points about her face and the concentration are good ones...thanks for that.

    Hi Emily,
I think the lighting and the pattern of the planks are good. I wish the girl were facing left which may have a better connection with the shoe on the left.

Different style for you, Emily. I see you're branching out.

I think it has potential, but there just isn't enough information here. I would have actually zoomed out a little, create more of a presence feel for the pic. A shot like this, with the extreme contrasts, really only works if the shapes are incredibly alluring, or if there is a big aire (sp?) of mystery about it. Not to sound too much like a guy here, but if the subject was a long thin, model stretching out before a workout or something, with a lot of dark shadows etc, then that would work better. Also - watch the movement. It's a tad bit blurred (which can also work if that's what you're shootin for..)

Yoyo & GB...thanks so much for your thoughts on this as well. I'll keep them in mind for next time I try this...the sun shines in through the window above our door and it makes for this type of lighting...so I'll definitely try it again.

    Re: Putting on Shoes

Haven't been here for a while thanks to work and this looks like a good photo to start with.

Emily - I think its spot on. I Love this and it gives me everything I need from the photo.

The lighting is wonderful and what a spot to have in your own house. The exposure is excellent in that you can see just enough of her arm to see what she's doing. The halo around your daughter is perfect.

I can imagine the concentration going into buckling up the sandal, I might have been better if it was a ballet shoe so that it fits in with the dress better, but it still works for me.

The softness makes this photo and the framing adds to this. Personally I don't think it matters that the sandal is on your daughter's blind side as this is the natural place for her to put it.

    Re: Putting on Shoes

I think there's a lot to like in this shot. The first thing that hit me was the strong abstract curve of the bright light. Then I found the beautiful highlit hair on one end of it to identify the subject and the sandal on the other end to identify the task. I like how the curve continues back into the frame in the lower part and lets me find the interesting strong shadow and subtle reflections. I think this would be an excellent print to hang on a wall.

    Re: Putting on Shoes

Hi Emily,,,man these types of images are difficult to shoot...What you have here is a high brightness range which both film and digital have trouble dealing with..You lack shadow detail and your highlights are burnt out..A touch of fill flash would have helped here dealing with the high brightness range..Without totally slamming this image it just doesn't work for me,,,I know its a grab shot...I like to see faces especially in children..

    Sorry Emily..
