    purple majesties

I have had my canon 50mm 1.8 lens for about 1 1/2 weeks. I had some extra time today at lunch and went to a building down the street that is unoccupied and found these beauties in a flower bed. I have not done any editing to this photo. I like how you can still make out the other flowers in the background. The histogram didnt show any "blown" areas, but some of the purple flowers look a little blown. Of course, this was taken around 12n and i tried to compensate for the harsh light. Any c and c will be accepted and appreciated.

    Thanks for looking,
    Mel

Yes, some places on the flowers do look a little blown.
I, too, like your background flowers.
    How close were you?
It looks like you got down which is good. If you aren't as old and stiff as I am, I think even lower so the flowers would appear taller than the viewer.
Your dof is ok here but I think a wider shutter with less dof would have made some really nice bokah.
What time do you get to work? Is it light out? Go earlier and get some nice light
It would seem that flowers would be pretty easy to shoot and basically they are but it isn't so easy to get something that stands out from the crowd.
    Keep Shooting!

To me the issue is contrast and lighting. The image is very contrasty and the light harsh-as you would expect in the middle of the day.

A polarizing filter would help some with the harshness and color but the best way to get good light is wait for clouds or get there early in the day.
    No, I DON'T need that.

Yes, shots like this are hard to get right. You really have to time it well so that the light isn't too intense, which causes over contrast. Try early morning.

PS - I have almost given up trying to photograph these type flowers, as I can never capture what I see! But I have seen nice shots of them so I know it is possible.

I think the background is too distracting...
