Public Servants . . .bus stop shelter

This particuliar shelter has always caught my eye in the late afternoon light. I decided to make this one a part of my series.
how does it work for you?

    Thanks.

I have gone away and come back to this one again. The light on the actual shelter is excellent and having the person there is great. But everytime I glance at this picture the slope on the roof of the shelter almost makes the whole picture tilt to the left. Is this just me? Probably. Perhaps a small crop off the left as well.
It's striking in its simplicity and the white verticals of the shelter and the occupants shoes provide the necessary contrast.

I see that too but it feels like it belongs. It's like it's leaning back to feel the sun because the transit rider looks like he's quite bundled up. I like the wide open space.

The picture literally tilt to the left, neither the pole in the foreground nor the horizon line are straight.
That being said, I guess that the picture would look like it tilt a litle even if it was actually straight since there is nothing on the right side to balance the shelter.
But then, I don't think that this picture needs balance (just a slight rotation lol). The unusal composition make the scene really weird to me. The lonely person and the lighting further enhance the feeling.

In the end, this is another pleasantly strange photograph... I would simply straighten the horizon line.

    Sorry Gary
That meant to read a small crop off the right

Nice work, an excellent exmple of making an everyday subject interesting.

Seb, pleasantly strange is spot on, I have always tried to put Gary's work into words, and that is it. Maybe that's what I love about it.

Tilt or no tilt? There are a couple of elements that may give the illusion of a tilt, but I think the horizon line is ok. Something to balance the picture on the right might give a better perspective, but we can't always get what we want (sorry Mick). All that aside, I have a hard time judging b&w because the darks always seem too dark and the whites too white.
I do like the mood and the composition, and that outweighs whatever 'flaws' I percieve.

A simple way to check out for tilt is to minimize your browser window, then drag the picture inside the window so the pole and the horizon line touch the window borders.

Thats something I oftenly do in Photoshop when post processing stuff as I find the grid to be distracting.

Definately an interesting shot Gary. The tones are one of the best I've seen recently, and the unique and interesting composition is a great addition. Wonderful shot and very well done. Is this a bus shelter I'm guessing?

    Great work,

What I really like about this shot is the relative greyness in the majority of the shot only to be broken up with the high contrasting shelter. It gives it a very good focus. For that reason, I wish those trees to the right weren't there but that's going beyond critiquing, I'm wishing for deforestation! A good shot overall.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and thoughts.
The rear sloping roof of this Bus Stop shelter lends itself to a tilted feel in the composition, and although I think Seb is right about it, it does not bother me so much as it still feels ok, especially having test printed this one in a small size and looking at it from a distance feels good to me. I find that stepping back from the monitor and viewing an image from afar can help in getting an overall "feel" of a composition. however, I did re edit this and corrected slightly for the tilt, but also , I brought out more highlights from the entire scene while keeping the front vertical posts from blowing out and losing all detail. I'm wondering how you feel about the edit.
Tom, i agree with your suggestion of cropping slightly off the right, to eliminate the small post in the bg.
Seb, i really like the "pleasantly strange" description. That is how i feel about them and is certainly my intent.

Gary, the tilt was an element of distraction to me so I think that your edit is more enjoyable for that reason. I also like the crop on the right side. I will honnestly admit that I have some difficulty to perceive the tones change. I do see that the sky is different and that the sign and the bench are slightly brighter but that's about it. I can't say if I prefer these new tones or the original ones. Either way, it works for me.

I like the lines and composition of the shelter as well as the sky and the person sitting. Great shot.
